Anyone Here Broken an Ankle?

At the end of October I misjudged my landing parachuting and ended up breaking my Fibula (bottom of the calf) calcanneus in 3 spots (once at the back and 2 spots at the front) dislocated the joint and the dislocation took all the tendons with it.

Easily the most painful moment of my life was the moment they reset the dislocation and plastered up the leg to try and quell the swelling and make surgery easier.

Luckily, only one operation later I now have 3 pins keeping everything in place (and a little bit of drill bit as a souvenir) and I am stuck with my feet up for a while (progress x-ray, stitches out and new cast on the 16th)

So I presume there are others here who have recovered from broken legs & ankles. Care to share your experience of it (recovery times, what you can and cannot do post recovery etc)

And if anyone could recommend a good sports physio in the Stoke on Trent area I would appreciate it.

Fractured my ankle in March, didnt have a cast thankfully but had to stay off it for 6 weeks as much as possible and couldnt run at all for about 10 weeks without really bad pain.

Hurt like hell when i did it (blocking a shot as a centre back and when i went to replant my foot it just rolled over and i heard what can only be desribed as someone cracking their knuckles, not fun!).

I don't remember a noise as such as I was too busy concentrating on protecting myself. Do remember being laid down on my side in the foetal position and the sole of my foot still touching the deck (just to add to the sick feeling) SMN it sounds like you had a narrow escape (surgery not required)

Yeah - it was very odd, i knew it wasnt a clean break as I could stand up (actually finished the game believe it or not :)!) - my shinpads, ankle guards and then taping basically held it in position until i went to the hospital an hour later.

The doc said to me "Well i very much doubt its broken if you've managed to walk in on it...*takes off my sock and sees said foot twice the size and purple* oh.. but then anything is possible, lets get an X ray right away" lol! That didnt set me at ease much.

Broke mine like 5/6 years ago now. Horrible break, the end of the bone on the inside (cant remember details). Got 2 footed tackled while playing football right in the side of the ankle, heard a delicious snap, so did everyone around. Broke the end of the bone off which split into 2. Had surgery and now have 2 metal pins in there :p

Still wake up with it stiff sometimes and lost a crap load of mobility, struggle to get my knee over my toes on that leg. Also if i put too much weight over it feels a bit funny/weak and running for a long time on hard ground hurts a bit. Word of warning to anyone who breaks a bone, do the recomended physio and then some...

Fortunately not, but then again I was always pretty good at landing - even doing hook turns, though I did have a close call once, but nothing broke!

Sounds horrid!

It was horrid but now that the pain and swelling have subsided (and the muscle atrophy well and truly set in) it is bearable. Slightly surreal that I was running between 40-50k a week and bouldering several times a week only 11 days ago and now I get out of breath going from the sofa to the bathroom or up and down the stairs.

With regards to the jump itself, I completely misjudged the wind and turned to go cross wind about 100ft too early and ended up landing on concrete. Then to cap it off I flared too early as well which certainly made things worse.

I have already had to promise my son that I will never jump again (poor sod thought I had died) so its not as if I can just get back in the plane either when fit again.

I have. 11 years on it still isn't right but it hasn't stopped me playing football on it all that time.

2 week check now in and ankle is as expected which is good. All the broken bits are pinned and are where they should be. The high fracture (fibula) is currently being well behaved and staying in place (it isn't pinned or plated) a new well fitting plaster cast has made a world of difference to the pain/soreness level. Sometimes I even forget I have a cast.

So 5-6 more weeks to go till I get the pins out and can stand (badly) on my own 2 feet again. I am still interested to hear of any physio recommendations in the Stoke/North Staffs area if anyone has any.

3" Spiral fracture of my left fibula about 15 years ago.

Didn't feel it for the first minute or so, but couldn't actually put any weight on it - I had no idea what had happened other than my foot had gone completely numb.

And then it started to hurt. A lot. And I'd been at the hospital for an hour after triage before a nurse came along and asked if I'd had any pain relief...

Backslab for a week or so (can't remember exactly), and then fibreglass for seven after that. Mine wasn't an issue for weight-bearing after a few weeks, but my ligaments were shot after that long in plaster. needed two months of physio to get to the point where I didn't need to sit down after a bit of walking once the plaster came off.

But, being a teenager, I'd had my cast off for a couple of weeks before I went skating again...

Ironically, the break was less detrimental to my overall athletic ability than tearing some more ligaments on my right ankle (did me over for about 6-8 months).

At 14, I was running 100m in 11.6s; after the break and tears, it went up to 13.2+. I was gutted.
