Finished watching Saki this evening. Series is about a girl, Saki, who ends up joining her new high school's mahjong club. This gives them enough female members to put forward a team to the prefectural competition with a hope of qualifying for the nationals, as well as entering the individual event for the same. Other characters include a pneumatically blessed first year who had previously won the middle school level national competition. The series covers the period of the prefectural competitions, both team and individual.

I liked this series, despite know very, very little about the game of mahjong. It did suffer a bit from the same thing as Big Windup where a single game will end up spanning multiple episodes due to the amount of detail which is gone into. I suspect that if you know mahjong then you'd be able to get more out of it but I did find it a fun and it does draw you in to watching it and keep you interested over the 25 episodes. It is helped that, over Big Windup, the majority of the cast are female characters (and there are several onsen/pool episodes :)) The OPs and EDs were pretty good too.

The series is does have an ending but it left wide open for a second series (to the extent that the closing credit sequence does have snippits of what the further story would include) ... which I would certainly watch if they ever made it.

I've almost finished rewatching Angelic Layer, which has been (as always with Clamp) a good deal of fun :)

I've also been reading the second Chobits manga, and i'm sure it wasn't mentioned in the anime that the designers of the Chobits worked on the Angelic Layer dolls :)
Much better at the story than the anime, although from memory the anime had a few extra bits.

Daphne in the Brilliant Blue starting tommorow I think.

Memyselfandi
I think it shows how well some script writer (and the rest of the studio involved), can do when they make a series about something rather niche, but still have it as enjoyable to someone who didn't know anything about the subject :)
I may give it a go sometime (I know that mahjong involves matching tiles in at least the most basic version, but apart from playing it on the PC solo that's my total knowledge).

You're right I don't think that the crossover is mentioned in the anime at all ... I do like Angelic Layer, it's just a good fun watch with a good coherent story running through it. I have the individual volumes for the Chobits manga and thats good too :)

Daphne in the Brilliant Blue starting tommorow I think.
Another nice series (aside from the main characters odd costumes :))

Mahjong in this is not like the solo playing on the PC where you match tiles. It's more like, in some ways, playing the Rummy card game where you have to make groups of cards, (or here tiles), in various combinations so that all your held things are used .... but a lot more complicated! The series does appear to be available in the sports section of Crunchyroll.

edit:

Finished watching the series of Macross Frontier earlier. I thought it was a really good sci-fi series with lots of action and nice music. I'll get around to watching the film some point soon ...

Hurry I'm dying here,

I need someone to recommend me anime that is similar to buso renkin, bleach, naruto and dbz (I know, it is not the choice any of you would choose). I don't want anything to do with mechs, military, physco, horror etc. I want the typical anime where someone saves someone from near death, grants them powers and the hero goes from there.

Thanks :D

Could go with One Peice if you haven't read/watched it already, another shounen series. It's a bit...quirky at times, it also has a design style that really annoys me occasionally, however it does have a lot better character/plot development than most shounen series.

Oh and just for giggles, go read Berserk.

Bit of an outside shot but try Gungrave.
It is the BEST anime I have ever seen ever. I cannot recommend it enough!

I just hope that Makoto Shinkai does better on the actual storyline this time ... Place Promised didn't have a bad plot (and looked good) but 5cm/s, whilst looking really nice, seemed a bit lacking in story to go with it. From the ANN write-up it sounds like this may be ok in that regard though ....

Ok, this week end, other than finishing the Macross Frontier series, I have been mostly watching:

Linebarrels of Iron OVAs ... light, pretty weak. I thought that the series was ok but these were a bit of a drag.

Mars Daybreak ... used to keep on seeing this trailed on DVD but never got around to watching it until this weekend. Overall I thought it was very good. You've got Mars covered in water, (but no Undines :( ), with submarines and city ships ... and pirates ... and mecha ... this all combines to make a reasonably fast paced adventure story. The characters are fun and the story is pretty good. Despite having little in common, (ignoring the large submarine aspect), it did remind of the first season of Full Metal Panic in terms of story pacing and style.

Toradora ... finally got around to watching the second half of this, (no disk issues (yay!)). When I watched the first half of this series I admit I was a bit disappointed ... I felt that there wasn't that good a depth of story and there was slightly to much violent humour ... overall it didn't really click with me. But I stuck with it and, prompted by the nice NISA release, got the second half. The second half is a whole other beast ... the depth and level of emotion in the story was much, much better than the first half. It was very, very good with only one bit not sitting right for me, (the comment the main male character makes to his mother in the street in the last but one episode) ... but an excellent watch overall.

Haha, glad you got round to finishing Toradora! Andi, I'd been meaning to watch it for a while when I did, after seeing it I wish I hadn't left it as long.

The 'one more' scene at the grandparents house was one of the most well pulled-off scenes I think I've seen in an anime.
Very nicely animated, quite amusing in it's own way, especially considering the characters and just felt 'right', as well as being completely adorable. The series itself was good, but as a single scene, that one scene from is definately one I think I'll remember :)
The whole return of the diary and the picture under the picture also just neatly tied things together in a really nice heartwarming way, yet extremely believably given the characters.

I do think a lot of how right the second half does things at points, derives from the slower time the first half of the series takes with you, as although its slower viewing in it's own right; it's really about giving you a chance to get to know the characters and realise that actually, they've probably all got a good shot at the gold in one way or another.
Arguably, viewed in its own right the first half is a different beast (much like Kanon), but then the series is just that, a series, rather than being two series, so you were always intended to be able to watch both together, and that's part of the pacing progression.

In some ways, my main dissapointment with the series was not the typical complaint on how much the ending rushed, but the extended time span at the very end (although the final scene with the locker WAS funny), as it just didn't feel realistic and almost left a bit of a downer on the ending.
Luckily I've since discovered that this seems to have been an arbitrary decision to boost tension for the anime, and that the original source material places it as a much more realistic couple of months, so I tend to think of it that way, as it just feels more 'on the mark'.
Still, was a nice warm-hearted ending in the least.

In other news - just finished watching "A Place Promised In Our Early Days"... really ironic timing given the film mentioned above :D
Absolutely beautiful, although the comparative lack of detail in the character designs was a a shame, as it held back the film from being one of the most visually stunning animated pieces I've seen.
Story was a bit trippy, although I think I've got my head around it, and I was pleasantly surprised by the happy ending, as for the last 10-15 mins of the film I'd had a horrible sense of 'bad end' foreboding.
Whilst it was SLIGHTLY bittersweet in that the girl lost her memories, and the realisation that the time afforded had offered her, you came away with a feeling it wasn't going to matter and that she'd almost certainly rediscover the most important part.
My only gripe with the film was perhaps pacing, it wasn't always a very fast film, sometimes feeling quite slow, and it wasn't one that flew by without me noticing the time, not to say it was a bad film, as that sort of thing and how you gel with a movie is always personal, and sometimes is even dependant on your mood when you watched it (I watched it in two shots with my brother).

On a completely different note, I'm almost done with K-on!! and have to admit to being a little disappointed with the second season, its still lighthearted good fun but the actual music and music related activities seem to have taken a backseat this season, and those were really some of the main reasons I began watching season one. Also, with the exception of the second ED, No thank you, none of the new music has really been to the standards of the first season, which is a shame as I really like female fronted rock regardless of language.

Unless anything changes, from memory I'd give season one 8-8.5/10, whilst this season edges more to a round 7/10. Fun, with no major flaws, but lacking the spark, energy and emphasis on music of the first one, feeling like a series with twice the length but half the focus, as well as half as much actual music.

K-on really is slice of life with a side helping of music i think. Compared to stuff like Macross, there really isn't that much of it when you really look at it.

Keeping up with the usual stuff, Ore no Imuoto keeps being consitently funny. Ah the grandparents...

Keeping up with Letter Bee as well, really like this series, the characters are just quirky and light hearted, and i love the look of Amberground with the world being permanently night. It has a nice charm to it.

With K-On I do think that the second season slipped more into slice of life + music compared with the first seasons music + slice of life ... whether this was better or worse is a matter of taste. Personally I found the second season pretty good and think that if they kept going in the same way as the first season then they would likely run into issues with where to go without making it overly out there. Some of the non-music stuff was really good anyway, like the field trip for example. There is also the point that the majority of the main characters are third years which means that they would have other things to fill their times than doing their music.

With respect to the music itself; personally I quite liked some of the tracks in the second series ... in fact my top 3 tracks include two from the second season; in order of appearance:

Fuwa Fuwa Time (S1)
U&I (S2)
Tenshi ni Fureta yo! (S2)

But that's all down to personal taste.

...

On currently airing stuff I'm back to my normal falling behind, apart from Agamami SS and Ore no Imuoto (although I haven't seen the latest of the latter yet ... probably watch it later).

U&I and Tenshi ni Fureta yo! are up there with some of my favourite songs i'e heard in anime now, and Utauyo!! Miracle has grown on me considerably since i first heard it (It seemed so out of place at the time). i think i've actually warmed to Aki Toyosaki's singing tbh. Even if the Yui voice is a fair bit squeaky.

Can anyone recommended a new anime for me to watch? Here is what I have currently watched and enjoyed.

Initial D
Azumanga Daioh
Full Metal Panic!
Death Note

I have been recommended to watch K-On, or is there anything else I should really get round to seeing? I have seen clips of One Piece and I didn't find it that brilliant if I am honest.
