Continuing a fine tradition of large, high resolution prototype displays, Samsung Electronics picked today to show off its latest innovation, in the form of the world's first 70-inch, "Ultra Definition" 240Hz 3DTV. That UD tag indicates a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels that puts your current HDTV and even larger projection 1080p 3D units to shame. The big deal in this version is the super high speed silicon Samsung has developed to drive all those pixels fast enough to support smooth motion and 3D viewing -- glasses still required, of course.

Not long now before this becomes mainstream for the larger TV sizes i suspect. Couple of years ?

Possibly, but how long before the next "bluray" comes out, and there is barely and HD channels even at the moment is there? I could be wrong though i havent god a HD subscription.

it will become standard elsewhere before the UK

Japan had 3G and HDTV long before we did.

Likewise America and HDTV. They had HD back projection CRT tellys

The US and Japan had broadcast HD which pushed the TV's into peoples homes, but what else could you get in HD? There was no HD here because the TV channels weren't keeping up with the rest of the world, there was nothing else in HD and therefore there was no demand.

We got HD when gaming went HD and when Blu ray came out (i.e. a demand created worldwide for HD devices), if a Super HD disc format gets released in Japan and the US, and the PS4/NeXbox is in Super HD then manufacturers will flog these TVs in the UK (at great premiums).

I've just made a small mess in my pants...!

I well want one. Dont think the mrs would be too happy though.

We're still broadcasting at 720p / 1080i and blu-ray players are still struggling to crack the mainstream. I'd say you're looking at more like 10 years over here

pretty cool. but before this can even think of going mainstream broadband and storage need to be addressed to make this a viable option.

anyway I would like to see UHDTV OLED rather than 3D crap ;), but will need content otherwise not interested

Gaming has been "HD" for well over a decade.

The UDTV wiill be out with nothing to run on it for years.

All I want from my TV right now is HD freeview, as 47 inches of SD looks poo.

I wouldnt be so surprised

maybe not in this country but i wouldnt be surprised if Samsung Knocked something up in Korea / Japan to showcase the TV.

The other issue is visual accuity, 1080p at normal viewing distances on most TV's is at or exceeding people's ability to resolve the detail, it's certainly getting to the realms of dimishing returns...

I guarantee it's just a slight incremental improvement visually compared to the leap of 576p->1080p...

Saying that, I'd not mind it for my projector in theory, I can just about make out fractional pixellation at 1080p on a 108" Screen at 10 foot if I start pixel peeping..
