Need a way to motivate myself to lose weight

I might have a look into a low glycemic high protein diet, and see what benefits it can bring. I definitely want to be able to do something that I can try and stick to long term!

I made myself some goals to stick to over the next few months.

Short term goals:
Get to the gym at least 3-4 times a week
Lose 2 kilos by Christmas
Eat healthier food, and try to cut out crisps, cakes etc

Long term goals:
Get to a target weight of around 65 kilos by easter
Keep going to the gym 4 times week (or out on the bike depending on weather)
Stick to healthier diet

It will be interesting to see what you achieve then. I look forward to hearing that you have indeed lost those two kilo's by Christmas, please post back around that time, I will look out for the thread. I use threads like these to encourage myself... so I look forward to hearing of your success.

All the best mate.

Thanks mate. I went out yesterday for a small run, about 30 mins, just to get back into the swing of things, and I felt so good afterwards! Forgot how good it feels to do some good exercise. I will be getting to the gym tomorrow, and starting easily on the cross-trainer, and seeing what makes me work, and what's too easy.

Obviously I don't want to totally kill myself, but I have never seen the point of exercising if you don't break a sweat and feel a little bit out of breath at some point during it!

ive found keeping a good routine really helps

knowing that on a certiain day/certain time is gym time, makes it easier.

Yeah, that definitely helps me too. I'm just trying to work it out around my lectures and project work for uni currently. Should have a better plan of when I'll be going later on today/tomorrow.

Find something you enjoy and find a way to work it into your daily routine.

I enjoy playing squash and badminton, but my playing partner is my wife and having a kid means we can't play together any more. Also I can't do it very day.

I enjoy swimming, but can only really do it at the pool near work, which means my lunch break so I can only to that a couple of times a week. Also, it's too cold to go lake swimming at the weekend.

I enjoy running, and if I'm taking public transport to work I'll run too and from the trainstation at either end.

I really, really enjoy cycling and so I cycle to work almost every day, 17.5 miles each way. It's quicker than publick transport and way more enjoyable (even today).

I get bored in the gym; I've tried running on a machine or using a rower, but it's just not for me.

Since switching from predominately running and going to the gym, to cycling and swimming I've lost six inches off my waist and yet only lost 4 kg in body weight.

The most important thing for me isn't how I trak goals, what is supposed to work best, or sticking to a routine, but trying lots of things and finding something that I enjoy and that I will actually find excuses to do.

Yeah, that is a pretty good idea :p

I do enjoy going to the gym and going on the cross trainer :) Also going out on the bike, just need to get over the cold outside :p Haha.

I should be getting some new shorts soon for the gym, as I don't have any shorts at all currently :(

The knowledge that you're out of shape and have poor fitness should be enough to make you want to better yourself. I've been there so I know. If it's really bothering you then you shouldn't need motivating.

You could set yourself up a rewards system for healthy meals you've eaten or attendance at the gym or any goals you achieve while you're there. Then treat yourself when you achieve. But you have to have the discipline to stick to it yourself and not just reward yourself for the sake of it, especially when you don't deserve it.

This howvever is hinged entirely on you.

If you want this bad enough you'll succeed. If you don't you'll fail.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean about it all resting on me.

Like I said, I did it before, I just need to focus, and want it again :) Which I really do! Time to stop talking about it, and get working on it!

Exactly :)

No point thinking 'I'll wait till the end of the month or next week.'

No time like the present. Make the healthiest meals you can with what you've got in the cupboard and when you next go shopping don't buy any crap or go down any of the isles where you might be tempted. Also don't go shopping hungry!

Best of luck OP in your goals, don't let us all down (motivation enough?! :p), come back at xmas telling us all how you have either acheived your goals, or are making steady progress towards them. :)

Remember, you're prodominantly doing it all for yourself and no-one else, you'll feel and look a lot healthier for it.

Thanks guys :)

I am currently looking into how I can change my diet around slightly. I quite often get energy crashes, so a low GI diet might suit me. I also feel like it will be the easiest to stick to even after I lose weight. And whilst at home or visiting people without being too rude.

I certainly like that idea best. Even after that run I am starting to feel better :p

It is a long road ahead, and I want to do it properly, and be able to stick to it.

Sticking to low GI and healthy foods is indeed the best, and easiest way to do it.

Yeah, I am indeed at Glasgow uni :p

Electronic engineering that means you're in the rankine building right beside the gym most the time? 1hr lecture gaps is long enough time to put a weights session in :p

You're right there :p It's damn nice being right next to the gym. Easy to have a good session, then jump to lectures in the morning also.

Find a sport you like and get involved at an amateur level, you'll make new friends and I find working out as a bi product of sport is much more fun than going to the gym solely to work out.

To be fair, once I get into the swing of it, I do really enjoy going to the gym to work out :) It gives me a proper rush! Thank you for the advice however.

I had a fanstastic session in the gym Sunday. I ran for 30 mins, cracked the 5km barrier and beyond and I done with a smile. I'm normally struggling and breathing hard when Im up to pace (around 13-14kph) but on Sunday I just seemed to brezze through it. I hit a point where I could feel my body was running hard but I was in a zone and felt I could go forever... I really enjoyed it.

Today I had a great "back" workout, and the cardio after was again superb, so Im already on point to hit my target.

81.3 kilo's at the moment.... 76.2 will be mine!!!...soooon!!!!

I love hitting those bits when you keep going! I usually have some music on when I'm at the gym, and once I hit a good batch of songs in a row, I feel like I can go on forever too. I get that huge endorphin rush, and a huge smile, and it feels amazing! Haha. I know that sounds a bit wrong, but I don't care haha. When I was out running on Sunday, I had that, and I was jogging along the side of the road feeling on top of the world with a huge grin on my face!

Well, I went to the gym today and had an awesome work out! Really felt good to get back to it all! I did a quick 5 min warm up on the treadmill, and switched to a random workout on the cross trainer. After that, another 10 mins on the treadmill to chill down a bit, and then a 15 min uphill blast on the cross trainer again! Felt so good. I was really in the zone 20 mins into the first cross trainer workout. Felt so good.

I also weighed myself on the proper scales at the gym. Mine at home are pretty rubbish. With my gym kit and shoes on, I weigh 77 kilos. So, still on to lose 2 kilos by Christmas (as a minimum, but I don't want to lose it too fast, as I don't want it to all pile on again afterwards) which means I should be 75 kilos (minimum) by Christmas (this being about 17th December, as I leave for my holidays on 20th December).

Just need to make sure I don't put on too much over the holidays eh :p I will be taking my kit with me, to go for a run every second day.
