Hi, sorry if this has been asked before but is there any reliable ways to track data usage, cellular and wifi ?

Reason i ask is that im only 2 weeks into my fresh month and im nearly at my 750mb cap, i checked my bill and it appears that large sums of data are being sent/recieved at midnight everynight, for now i have turned off any celluar data until i can pinpoint what it may be or which app is updating maybe ?

Any help appreciated ;)

I go to settings > general > usage and it tells you how much data you have sent/received on your mobile network data. I reset it every month and keep and eye on it as I did exceed my 500mb limit once.

Someone at work bought an iphone 4 on orange and she's been having quite some problems on it with her internet. She has a 750mb limit and when I checked her usage she had used 4.8 GB in 3 weeks and also SENT 4.5 GB. She doesn't go on youtube or stream any films, how on earth could she have used so much? Obviously she has no idea how it's reached that figure, she's not even sure what the figure means but I told her it's a lot! In terms of downloading apps, she doesn't even have that many and the ones she does have are just small games - plus I told her in the first week to connect it to her wifi at home which she did. Anyone have any possible ideas? It seems like she isn't even using the internet yet the mobile data usage is showing it's being used heavily?

In settings, general, usage shows sent/received data. This doesn't include WiFi for obvious reasons. :p

As for tracking which app it is, if they are all shut in the multitasking task bar then it has to either be notifications or pull/push email.

Unless you jailbreak there is no way to track which app is using what data. And even if jailbroken I don't think there is an app to do that.

Edit: 4.5Gb!?

Since 20th August 2009 i've sent/received: 514Mb/1.8Gb. There is something wrong with Orange's usage data. There is no way that is correct!

dam, appears i was multitasking everything on my phone then lol, thats means that..oh wait.. i had everything open ? lols

No, those apps are frozen in ram and pop back up again when you return to them, as it's not expensive on the battery to power ram it's very efficient. Only apps that utilise a few API's will be doing something in the background - such as a radio app, although, only the background audio API is being used, the app is still frozen irrespective. :)

Did she have an iphone before? If she did and created this one from a backup of it, then its probably still showing the total used up to now, assuming she had never reset it.

The usage meter is garbage, currently tells me I have downloaded 4GBs since the end of September. Doesn't match up with what 3 have.
