So, around 11 months ago I made this thread:

I've actually also been driving the Octavia the past 3 months (company rental, specifically asked for it) and for my limited knowledge of cars, it drives beautifully. I drove one towards the end of last year and loved it too.
Now, I did say I was going to give myself a year to decide and with a month to go, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for it. I've not had the opportunity to test drive many cars this year that was in my price bracket, but I did get a chance to drive a new Passat Saloon and really loved it. I mean, really loved it. I also drove a Touareg (yes, different type car) and new(ish) Vectra. Being all said and done, I still prefer the Octavia, the Passat comes in a close second.
I understand that it will hardly be anyone's first choice and that the odd person would make the obligatory stupid remark. It would not be 'Motors' if it don't happen.
So basically, the budget is 16k, but I can stretch to 18k max. Any more than that and it becomes silly as I'm not a super car enthusiast. I've been driving boy racer cars my whole life, I want something that fits my age (30) a bit better, and something that's enjoyable to drive with cheap(ish) maintenance and service costs. I suppose a good second-hand BMW or Volvo is in the price range but I would resent the service/parts costs.
Casting your own biased aside, would you say an Octavia is a good buy, and if not, what other similar type car in 16-18k budget would you recommend? I'm having a slow November and will have time to nose around a bit better if good suggestions comes up. If nothing else 'wows' me, I'll head down to my local Skoda dealership and pick one that I like.
Thanks.
PS. Unless it's unclear to some, I'm buying second hand and not new.
