£4,000 budget for a nippy, fun car?

Golf's, especially GTi's seem to have a 'premium tax' over rivals such as the Focus and such.

Best to avoid unless he gets a good deal as the Mk4 was pants anyway and you're much more likely to find a decent ST in budget.

Indeed they do, still worth a suggestion though I felt, seeing as that 'premium' is largely down to the sort of perception traits that I get the feeling the OP has :p

Right well, i am a similar age to you, i was in the EXACT SAME circumstances insurance wise, (but im a year younger)
i looked at 172s and 182s, each was around 2900 to 3000 a year
i looked at mr2 turbos they were 2900
i looked at basically everyother hot hatch going,
in the end i got a 306 gti-6. but that was 2100 bones and the insurance was 700 more for the 9 months remaining on my policy, which works out to be 1800 ish for the year
i.e the point of all this is if you look at a clio and you can insure it dont discount a mr2, i found mr2's cheaper than clio sports, infact i found everything cheaper than clio sports, inculding afaik a focus rs mk1

well overpriced that, you can get a supercharged one for that much, 350 hp yes please?

Yeah I know just rare to see a 1 owner lowish mileage white minter thats all. Then again I paid £3k for a 1.3 106 rallye when the rest where around the £1k region, I kept it 18 months and didn't lose a penny.

Supercharged? No ta, standard for me :)

2.9L engine? I'm guessing the fuel consumption isn't too cheap either? Seems like a crazy suggestion to me.

I'm guessing putting my Dad as the named driver is against the law right?

Having him as A named driver is fine. Having him as the main driver is not fine.

It's slightly confusing reading your posts that say 'the named' when generally speaking you would call that person the main driver and anyone else on the policy named drivers :p
