I'm currently running my Q6600 at stock (I know, I know, its against the law to run one of these and not overclock it! ;)) but according to coretemp, my temps are around 45-50 when idle so I dont want to melt the CPU so I could do with a decent cooler to relace my old one (see sig.)

Can anyone recommend a decent budget (max £20-£30) cooler for me to get some decent(ish) results out of my Q6600??

A mate of mine recommended this one:

Any good for my needs do we think??

Thanks for any suggestions.........

ps. ideally I'd like one with the thermal paste already on as I'm not very good at getting it level myself!

I would think its not just the cooler, but perhaps the case/fan layout also.

Can you post your case and fan specs, and maybe a pic of the inside?

Regarding what cooler to get in that price range, I would suggest asking on the MM here for a Thermalright Ultra Extreme (TRUE). You should easily pick one of those up for £30 with a decent fan.

Thanks for the replies.....

My case is the one in this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18129604&highlight=steviep (sorry, 1600+ posts and still dont know how to insert images - but thats another thread!)

The case has a fan at the front bottom (I assume dragging air in) and then there is another fan on the top of the case as opposed to the one at the rear in the pics!

Hope this helps!

My CPU is a Q6600 G0 off the MM but it has been "lapped" and as I said above, I'm rubbish at applying the thermal paste myself!

I ran my Q6600 with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, then upgraded to Titan Fenrir. Both were budget coolers but kept the Q6600 well cooled @ 3.2GHz.
Perhaps it is better to check if the HSF is seated properly?

I know its seated properly but the thermal compound application was definitely a bit hit and miss!!

Not sure the fan itself is working 100% - it didnt even start when I booted up once last night! (although to be fair it has every time since!)

Just thought it might be a good opportunity to get a decent cooler and have the paste already sat there!

I have this and my temps are very very good:

Not the cheapest and you need to get the fans seperate.

This has very good reviews as well and looks like it include sthe fan:

Get some good thermal paste like the Arctic MX3 and clean the old stuff off as the paste makes hell of a difference as well! Very easy to apply, the arctic website has good instructions dependant on chip so can't go wrong! Poeples mistake normally is too much paste!

Phobia is a bit strong ;) - I just remember really struggling to get a thin layer applied to the CPU as every (what I thought were) straight edge tool I had ended up dragging a thin line through the paste!

To be honest, most people seem to think the pre-applied paste is pretty crap anyway so I might just bite the bullet and get one of there Gelid ones with some MX3 paste and see what happens!

Thanks for all the suggestions and help guys......

My TRUE kept my Q6600 quite cool until I recently went for water cooling, with dual fans I never hit above 70 in prime/occt at 3.6.

Perhaps try getting a 2nd hand TRUE, I guess they are getting on a bit though.

That does not matter too much, the pressure under the HS will remove any thin lines. many people just go with a thin line of TC across the CPU or a blob in the middle. I use an old plastic card to thinly spread a layer across starting with the large grain of rice in the middle.

Gone for the Gelid after reading some decent reviews on it.... along with a bit of Arctic Cooling MX3 paste! :D

Thanks for all the suggestions guys....
