I have the Asus Rampage Formula X48 Motherboard which in the spec it reads it's ATI crossfire ready, It's 2 16 X lanes so can i not use Nvidia 580 in SLI ?

Thanks for any input..

Hey,

I believe on the older intel boards if they are crossfire support only then only crossfire will work unless you get the modified slic drivers. Google and you will find what you hopefully require ;)

Yeah but would you really want to be constantly using hacked drivers to get 800 quids worth of video cards working right?

IMO the op would be better off upgrading his mainboard cpu etc which could be done for the price of one 580, and just stick with a single 580 for the time being.

Or just get one 580 and be done with it. It's not like he really needs to upgrade his CPU is it? Why would you need 2 anyway?

(I say this on the assumption you are a gamer using a normal-ish monitor setup)

My Monitor is 1900 X 1200 and how much slower would a 580 be over my Xfire set up ?

Thanks for your help guys ;)

I didnt need hacked drivers on my x48. Just a registry hack and 260 SLI worked very well. Sure the reference (link) for doing it was on here somewhere.

Indeed it isnt done with hacked drivers anymore from what I read, you do a registry hack that alters the vendor id your chipset reports so the drivers see it as an SLI compatible motherboard.

Don't take this the wrong way Marvin please but are you sure ? "this is not a fanboy statement ?

And if anyone can point me in right direction for this registry hack PLEASE :)

Firstly, the cards I've owned:

-4850
-4890
-5850
-GTX470
-GTX480

I'm by no means a fanboy.

Simply checking a few review sites and comparing the GTX480 against the 4870X2 (I guess there'll be a few differences) but the 480 beats it in pretty much everything - making it the better card. (Besides, having a single card is almost always preferable to having 2 cards, where most people would take a small performance hit to have a single card - and thus simplicity, without having to worry about SLI/Xfire drivers - and trust me, I've been down the SLI road. Didn't end well, hence the GTX480).

Quick link: Clicky - not the be-all-and-end-all but it's a quick look over the cards.

Thanks Marvin very helpful insight :) it's so hard because it's your own money i just don't want to waste it for the sake of it.

I also have an X48 mobo and as long as what's needed to make it sli compatible is pretty straight forward then two 470's could now be an exciting prospect. What are the possible downsides if something went wrong? Any well known dangers?
