Rioting in London?

None of them look like students though, they all look like the hippies involved in the G20 riots. It's disgusting.

It's always the same bunch of great unwashed that turn up to hijack any protest. I saw some of them on the train on my way in this morning. Get a ******* job !

Sure, and the solution is to lock out those who can't afford it, since they clearly don't deserve the privilege of university education as much as the better off members of society.
exactly!

the right thing to of done imo would be of to cut places and have things like entrance exams and tests.

would stop all the thick rich kids getting in to spend 3 years drinking and hoofing cocaine while they study something that will never be relevant to the job daddy has lined up for them.

so we are meant to keep funding uni education when the country has huge debts? Degrees are becoming de-valued because of the easy access and funding all these students get.

Exactly and the influx of soft degrees isn't helping either. Back even in my day going to University meant something - you were a cut above.

Big deal. Just fire a water cannon at them.

Looks like they need a wash anyway! :D

Sky news reporter on the ground confirmed that they are definately majority of students.

They should ramp up the fees on the more "trivial" degrees like Media studies, but subsidise those like English, Maths, Science, Medicine (possibly with caveats providing they work in the UK for x amount of years) IMO. How can you say that you "need" media studies to be a journalist, when English/English Lit would stand you in far better stead. Or am I just misinformed?

Lots of people go to uni, but many of the younger lot I know are all doing stuff that isn't really going to make them stand out when they graduate. There are still plenty of people who think it's their God-given right to go to uni and get hammered for 3 years... I know plenty that have done it and just about scraped into a 2:1 when they finally got their act together. I think dropping courses down by a year could work in some cases to counter this anyway.

And they compare themselves with the suffragettes.

Cut funding to the more "joke" degrees (i.e not STEM subjects), use that money to maintain the current level of tuition fees for the rest.

It's called a student loan ;).

Which is going to be funded entirely by those who receive it, under the assumption that the degree will allow them to repay it.

It puts anyone who wants this kind of education straight into a horrible amount of debt from the word go. What about people who aren't doing a degree purely so that they can get a good job afterwards? What about people who are doing a degree that has no direct economic value?

go them! :) enough of the bending over.. everyone has a right to learn.. if you can't afford it what are u meant to do? get into big debt? no way..

all those disagreeing with them probably have finished their courses and ALREADY are in well paid job.. if you lot were students these days you would be thinking different..

Then why exactly are they doing the degree? :S

Yes, it puts us students in more debt, which is never good, but it's damn near unavoidable in the current state the country is in!

I'm a student, 600 people from my uni went, and I think its a complete waste of time. I'd rather be writing my essay I have to give in quite soon than getting worked up about something that doesn't effect me.

Even if fees go up, people will still have student loans. Its not as if you'll have to pay a down payment of £9k. For subjects that add no value to the country, get rid of them.

I can't say I'm surprised. Because of the demographics in this country the younger generation are politically second class citizens at best and it's very hard to for them to find a voice. I don't agree with the destruction of property and it's probably counterproductive but I think the point has been made. If you dump on them expect consequences. I hope the protests continue, but I also hope they find a more intelligent way of expressing their grievances.

Some of us that do vocational qualifications to advance our careers often end up paying for it out of our own pockets. That runs into thousands in many cases. Can we have those for free too? ;)

Many of the poorer, brightest and most talented students can get bursaries in many cases. It happens a lot in Music study for example.
