Hi there,

Been offered my fathers Volvo S80 for £3k, it financially makes sense as I can sell my Mazda 6 and put a little money towards it and end up with a 'better' car

Specs

Volvo S80 78,000 miles
2.4 D SE Auto Saloon Winter Pack / parking sensors

Mine

Mazda 6 2.0 D 110,000 miles TS standard stuff no extras apart from tow bar

The Volvo could do with £400 dentless repairs / scratches etc and my old man smokes 40 a day so I need your advice as I detest the smell, there was some good advice some time ago, the Mazda could do with a new wheel as the wife has decided to kiss every kerb in Sussex but I've just had a new clutch and new battery.

What do you reckon? what do you reckon the Mazda is worth? am I buying into a bag of future expensive trouble?

Appreciate your thoughts

Cheers

Don't expect it to be particularly economical, as Volvo's aren't known for being frugal, regardless of fuel and certainly not autos.

S80s aren't that great and are fault-prone. There are a few posters on here who've had a 1st gen S80 and I'm sure they can back it up.
The fact it's going to absolutely reek of cigarettes would be the nail in the coffin for me.

Plus you've just stuck a new clutch in the 6. Don't swap.

you ideally need one of these - http://www.autosmart.co.uk/Aromatek.html

the fleet valeters at work use one, you set a time amount on a little controller and just shut it in a car, 4hrs later, job done, the smell has been banished forever.

it kills dog/pet smells, cigarettes, puke, anything really.

It must be banged up good and proper if it requires £400 of dentless repair work?

I was thinking a days work for a dent man, the front corner of the bumper is pretty scuffed and theres several dings form my step mum reversing into things

Frugal i'm not too fussed, I train it to work and have a fuel card for the non train days so I'm not that worried, also it's not nr 1 priority for me

Good to hear owners views, especially the auto box if they are fragile

The six still shudders under load I think something else is wrong also it's started stalling when idling cold, some say egr some others say mega bill throw the car away fuel pump seals

Ohh tar, do you have to leave the car running, the stench still gets into the heater / blower system, my wifes old breadvan civic smelled fine until the a/c kicked in hot then you got a blast of stinky smoky air first

Thanks all :)

no need to have the car running, but I suppose it could help clear out the system( I will ask at work for you tomorrow).

normally what they do is just set it for a 4hr "burn", plug it into the mains, shut the doors and leave it, it does work!! I have seen small miracles performed with one :D

Thanks, be interested in any first hand experience, I've driven it loads and I know it's a big wallowy tank but any ownership opinions
