Cam belt gone

Unless the pistons are damaged badly, could you not just get a new complete head from a breakers yard and fit it.

I've never seen cams bend, but i have seen one broken into 5 different sections on a ford 1.8 diesel when the plastic idler gear failed.

they should be changed around 70k

my astra is an 02 but only done 20k and ill be changing it soon

i think the price is abit much and they may have hiden costs for fitting a second hand engine...........

you have to weigh cost of repair compared to getting a new car

I had already asked the garage to fix it, so I cant just replace the engine/head etc now.
My issue is that I dont want to be told the cams are bent :(
So how likely is it & can I tell if i'm being lied to?

You've done it now you've asked them to fix it.

Not much more you can do other than to bend over and wait. Completely insane thing to do on a 145k engine imo but you've done it now and cant exactly go down there and start working on it yourself.

You could ask for the bent parts at the end to see, but would you know a set of bent cams from another car from yours ? they could be from any car. By asking them to fix it you've put them with all the power and you with none.

Always amazes me when people come on here to ask for advice, after they've been bent over the garage and think they're paying too much.

laber costs will be much the same

Hows that, you don't have to undo the gearbox, half the wiring loom or most of the cooling system, a head could be swapped in less than a few hours, takes more than that to get an engine out put the new one in line it up with the gearbox and get everything re-connected before you even know if the thing will work.

price wise seems about right unfortunately.

might have been a better option to sell yours on as spares/repairs for a few hundred then buy another astra.

thats if your changing the engine

but if your putting in new valves its much the same

As i already posted, in post 22, source a good out of a scrapper and just replace the head complete, all you would need is a head gasket and a cam belt, maybe a few other small seals.

Why did you waste out time by asking when you've already made the call :/

Because they havent said the cams are bent or anything yet. I was asking how I know they are being honest if they do phone & say they are. I was also asking how likely it is as I don't have a clue, but the people I speak to think it's very unlikely.

The cam belt has gone on my misses astra (was my astra so i'm covering the cost).
Its been in the garage a week, they have quoted £700 - £800 as all 16 valves were bent.

How is this so? Surely for all this to happen, all 16 valves would have to be in the down position when the cam belt failed?

Just a minor issue I know, but I didn't think that there was any point of the firing cycle were that would be the case...
