FOA: Fox

I can agree with the black dash/tan leather being a little odd, but those saying the red is bad... no one has ever been more wrong.

If it was silver or dark blue, then yes I'd agree. Red is good.

How on earth is a newer, more expensive, better looking, faster E92 a step down from a 9 year old previous generation 5 series?

This tbh, don't forget the E39 is pretty much 20 years older than this car. The E92 is a far nicer place to be, almost as nice as an E60 if it didn't have the 70s LCD climate display. ;)

That will look awesome in the metal. Saddle brown is one of those colours which doesnt photograph well at all I've sold a few E92's with it.

Fox will turn his nose up at this as it has pre HDD Nav.

Crimson red = Win! but only when it is clean. It also seems to stone chip really easily aswell.

Very nice but totally the wrong colour combo and as said, its too old. You want a 57 plate onwards ED model, or even better a 58 plate onwards model with revised HDD based iDrive.

I've been watching the E92 market very closely and it's undergone major changes in a matter of months.

It is now quite easily possible to get a GOOD 330i or 335i M Sport for under £20k with sensible mileage. These seem to be shedding huge amounts at the moment which is perhaps a bit worrying. I'm pretty confident that next Summer, which is when I plan to make the move, £15k will buy an early M Sport and under £20k will buy a 58 plate. The 330i's - remember, 272bhp and 39mpg combined - seem to be offering even more excellent value. One with a manual box is a tempting alternative. The key point with an E92 is to buy a low mileage one you can keep in warranty for your entire ownership period. There ARE reliability issues with them - the high pressure fuel pumps in the 335i's are especially fragile and VERY expensive. Running one without a warranty is bonkers. Shame, really, as low mileage cars are generally a con.

I do agree that in many ways a 3 Series, however new, is a step down. The E39 is a better built car, for sure. But where else do you go? The E60 is old news, it's a superceded model and whilst that in itself isn't an issue spending large money on a previous generation car is daft and the E60's for less money are pre LCI models which I strongly dislike. The F10 is stunning but it's going to be at least 3-4 years until I could even think about one of those.

Thats a bit of a bizarre comment. 20 years old? Eh? As a design the E39 is 10 years older than the E92 and 9 years older than the E90 on which its based. Where does 20 years come from? The only thing 20 years older than an E92 - and even that isnt quite there - is an E34!

didnt say i hated it , just made no sense to me , specially as most bmw's i see are touted as "drivers cars" just thought myself manuals would make sense, but maybe thats me being a pleb

I'd rather have a manual which is what drew me to this one (high spec, lowish mileage, manual, not a 'boring colour) but to be honest I've only ever driven 3 autos - 2 were Ford Mustangs and the other an E39 so I'm sure things are a lot better now.

Really good to see these getting into affordable now, if Fox is to be believed then next year you'll be looking at some very good deals for a top spec, very quick current 3 series.

Sorry that was a typo, I meant 10 not 20 which I only just realised when looking on my PC just now. Of course I realise the E39 hasn't been around since 1986. ;)

Changing gears manually with a clutch makes it a drivers car but with semi auto stick or flappy paddles it's suddenly not?

i mean it by it takes the fun out of the car i know when i was testing the dsg it wasn't as fun as the manual, just feel more involved like i said probably me being a pleb

Much as I don't really get you car buying habits at all I do think it's a shame you have this need to have a reasonably new car all the time. It seems like you have a perfect example of you perfect car, would you not want to be 2025's version of that person with an absolutely mint E28?
