Cable management question for Silverstone FT02 owners

I am going to be transferring the rig in my sig to an FT02 next week. From what I've read it's the best type of case to cool GTX 580's, especially as it now comes with penetrator fans. Will be running the H70 in push/pull exhausting out of the top of the case.

I have a few questions :

1. Space I hear is tight behind the mobo tray. Will I have enough room to put 4 pci-e cables, atx cable, and 2x8pin eps cables behind the tray. The plan is to use NZXT braided extension cables on the motherboard which means these psu cables will need to go behind tray. From pics I've seen on various websites, most people do not run the pci-e cables behind the tray as the sidepanel then bulges.

2. Any issues with the Rampage III. Specifically will the Nec Optiarc DVDRW get in the way of the 2nd GTX 580 ? Is the 4pin molex on the side of the motherboard accessible (one near the drive bays) ?

3. Some people on hardforums have said the tooless 3.5" drive bays don't clip in very well and if the case tilts even slightly, the trays come flying out. Is this problem still happening ?

4. Any fit or finish issues ? I know the paint on my raven would chip when I tightened the sidepanel thumbscrews.

thanks

1. Yes it is tight, but ive got a lot of cables inc PCI-E back there, you'll need to spend some time on the cabling making sure nothings overlapping too much but you ought to be fine, mine doesnt bulge at all.

2. Sorry dont have that mobo, not sure I can help.

3. Never had that problem myself.

4. No

Personally I decided to not get a corsair H70 due to the fact this case uses the air pressure to expel air out of the single 120mm fan. If you introduce a source of heat at the exit then it may not work efficiently. I would recommend the Thermaltake Frio as a good air alternative.

Your gtx580(s) will work good in this case as they will expel the heat upward and straight out of the case.

A question. The GTX580 (and probably subsequent 5xx cards) use this vapour chamber cooling system. Will that work optimally with the card being vertical? I've seen this mentioned in a couple of places but haven't seen anyone with a Silverstone case that uses the rotated mobo arrangement get a 580 yet. I REALLY want this case for my first ever build but don't want any limitations with potential GPUs.

Also, first post. Toot toot!

Nvidia were pimping the 480's and now the 580's in maingear cases which use the same motherboard orientation as the silverstone. So I reckon it will be fine. And any searches I did on hardofurms, xs, nvidia forums said the same thing.

I've had the H50 in the raven rv02 and it's practically made for it. There is enough ventillation at the top for the gpu's to exchaust efficiently and a pair of akasa vipers on a h50 or h70 will take care of the rest. In fact when I had my rig in an rv02 the cpu temps were down 5 degrees under load, and gpu temps were down 7 or 8 degrees under load. This was coming from a HAF. They gpu's also ran quieter as the fans did not need to work as hard since the 180mm fans on the bottom of the case were drawing in cool air into the gpu. As a matter of fact maingear sell their high end rig with this cooler (asetek) and a pair of 580's now. Also Kyle Bennet over on hardocp found this inverted design was the best way to run Fermi's.

I'm obviously waiting to see how the 69xx cards compare but that's good to hear, cheers. I'll keep my eye on the benchmark thread in the time being, odds are someone's going to have an RV, RV02 or FT02.

1. I run my cables around the back of the motherboard, it is a bit of a tight squeeze but I have 5 hard drives and my optical drives worth of power and sata connectors, 2 PCI-E power connectors (braided) and the motherboard cables (braided) running around the back. It is a bit of a tight squeeze and it does need cable management but it is definitely doable. You should be able to get another set of power cables around the back for a second graphics card, you just need to route everything properly and stop the cables resting on each other to stop the side panel bulging. It may require more effort than other cases but I think it is well worth it.

2. I can't speak for your motherboard sadly, my Maximus II Formula can squeeze two cards in but it is very very close to the back of my optical drive. Apologies for not having a better answer.

3. Never had this issue myself.

4. The finish is superb and very durable. The window scratches quite easily sadly, but I'm pretty sure that is the case with all acrylic windows. It is a solid and well built case though, at least in my opinion. It is miles ahead of my old HAF 922 with regards to that.

If you want I could post a photo up of my internals, you may be able to get an idea of how much space you have. A rough one mind you but I could give you the dimensions of my optical drive and you could make a rough guess on that perhaps.

Replaced my 2 5870's with a Gtx 580 last night in my FT02 case.

The 580 idles at 30 degrees & after playing wow for a couple of hours last night the card reached 60 degrees max.

On the plus side the motherboard is running cooler by dropping from 50 degrees to 45 degrees.

I am running a I7 920 overclocked to 3.2 with a H70 mounted in the exhaust fan position at the top in the FT02.

So yes the vapour chamber cooling works fine with the card in a vertical position.

The 580 is running at stock clocks.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Thanks chief. Since I'm dead set on a case that's awesome on air, and also looks aesthetically pleasing, the FT02 ticks all the boxes and there doesn't seem to be much of anything else that looks as nice, I would have been a bit gutted if I had to pick something else; the HAF X offers immense cooling but I'd want to put a proverbial bag over it's head. I thought about the Lian Li X1000 too but it's about £70-80 more expensive than the FT02.

Now I just have to wait for the cases to start being sold with the AP181 fans in. At least one site I've seen has them on pre-order... only a matter of time.
