AMD HD6970 guaranteed to beat GTX580, according to sources

Functional generation is just as valid a measure as chronological.

Take fighter Jets as an example. The US F-22 Raptor is considered the only operational 5th generation jet, while jets that are not even in operation and are still in development are considered to be of a previous generation.

The difference there is that there's different uses for different types of jets, it's not really an applicable comparison. You wouldn't comission the most advaned jet for something "mundane".

Could be a few 580's on the MM for under £250 in a few weeks:).

But, unless AMD are very aggressive with clocks on the 6970, I cannot see it really matching or exceeding GF110 within most games. It would need to be ~50% faster than the 5870 to see an overall win and I doubt whether a few optimisations can achieve that.

Exactly, if chronological generation is the be all and end all then the 580 is a generation above the 480. And Nvidia could release an absolutely identical 580 and call it a 680, or even down-clock the 580 to be slower than a 480 and still call it a 680 and some how this still becomes a 3rd generation.

The ATI fanboys that plague this forum can't have their cake and eat it. They can ether accept that architecture and functionality is at least as important than naming, or accept why the 580 is called a 580 and not a 485. They cannot argue both, anyone who does should be permabanned for trolling!

I don't think you know what you're talking about. Releasing a 580 as a 680 doesn't mean it's a new generation. New generation is when there's significant changes to the core. The fact that Rroff is claiming Fermi to be second gen DX11 shows he also doesn't know what he's on about. It's not about being fanboys, but then you're one of the biggest on this forum.

Price is gonna be an interesting one with the GTX580 out the door and at an almost reasonable by nVidia standards price thats gonna need a complete rejig of the AMD pricing strategy.

I predict with no evidance at all a £350 price at the very most.Possibly even £330 ish. That would leave the 6990 to come in around £450-£500 ish.

Your link provides nothing to back up that claim up, just some dodgy site looking for traffic. It's not worthy of a thread, it should have been posted in one of the other 69** threads. As Marine pointed out it's just troll bait when using that title with no credible source.

How about " 6970 rumoured to beat GTX580 "

Actually before you awnser for everbody raven, I for one am interested in any possible rumours concerning the ati cards so i do think it was worth a thread and cheers ejizz for posting the stuff you found.

Funny is`nt it how certain people didnt post certain comments when it was a simalar thread except with 1 major difference.......it was about the 580:mad:

These same people are the first to point and scream "fanboy" at anyone who doesn't agree with them.

Why does every thread have to be jumped on around here? Some of you lot need to calm down and get real. Regardless of how he wrote the title, just read it and take it for what it is. You're all smart enough to do that.

Besides, 12 days before the suspected launch it wouldn't surprise me if some of these sites have them already.
i agree..

it seems like a lot of NVIDIA guys here that jump down on threads about the 69xx series.

Lets say this is right.
Lets say it is faster than 580GTX.
Lets say its faster by 5% and cheaper £350. Best case scenario.
Still major fail as they missed the Christmas shopping period.
You want to be at home enjoying your gfx card over Christmas and not wait for a delivery on 1 JAN.
