Britain's Trillion Pound Horror Story...

Can't the UK just print loads of money off and give it to whoever they owe it to? Or isn't it as simple as that?

No, it's really not as simple as that, its like stocks and shares, the more currency we have the less it will be worth.

In effect if we doubled our output of pounds the rate would effectively halve, at least, in theory.

Yes, but this will devalue the pound leading to massive inflation and will mean no-one wants to lend us any money any more, which will lead to a funding crisis for the UK. Not a smart move realistically.

Essentially though we (and the USA) have been printing money under what's known as Quantitative Easing - this money is tightly controlled however, and used to buy bonds in corporations (i.e. we lend it to companies) in the hope that they'll use that money to invest in the UK. It's not clear if this has been successful or not, but in theory it should have mitigated the effects of the recession. What I'm not clear about is when the corporations pay the BOE back the QE loans, what happens to the money? As it was created does the BOE destroy it again or does it make its way somehow into to HM coffers.

It said if we sell ALL the property in the UK we will still be about a £1 Trillion short lol.

How the hell are we expected to get out of this?

WE? Are not the banks responsible for the vast majority of this so why WE?

yep, we need massive cuts and a new way of doing things. The tories cuts just don;t make an indent. We need total reform on so many things.

I've always thought benefits should be bare minimum to survive with cheap shared housing.
And surly we can reduce NHS a lot and cover the short fall with insurance policies. Some sort of NHS covers essentials and anything else is covered by relatively cheap insurance policies. All though would need to be fleshed out and thought about in much more detail.

or we could just cut NHS to zero for a year or two.

at least they are doing something about it. Can you imagine if labour had won? we would be borrowing more and cutting less. we would be utterly shafted. we still are, just not as badly :)

That's something I've not understood either. A lot of the developed world is in debt. There are two possibly three continents that are poorer than us. Where is this money going?

Too a rich elite - most of the world's money rests with a very tiny minority while the rest of us are milked (to various degrees of course)

some people are 'milked' to death...

totally agree, but public do need to wake up and accept it.

Realisticly what is being done is insignificant as we have no real means to pay back all the debt, ever ... we will always be in debt.

but people (media and sheep) complain when the govt. cut anything.
