Right, i know nothing of performance BMWs. My dad is no speedster but likes to have a fair bit of power on tap (currently terrifies me in his Subrau Legacy spec B Twinscroll). Hes after a beamer of some sort according to him as he likes my 320Ds handling but not the bag of nails under the hood plus he wants a bigger car.
I know he sounds like some rich idiot with too much money.. well he kinda is although he worked quite hard for the dough plus property buying in the right era works wonders when selling it off in recent years etc.. :)
Hes just got it in his head that a 550i or a M5 is the ticket, pros and cons of each? or is it a toss up? bear with me :o

New 550i hands down. Newer gen of car, almost as quick, its just a complete no brainer especially for a non car enthusiast.

Infact I'd argue that a 535i M Sport with loads of spec would probably suit him better.

You'd need to be bonkers to spend £50-60k on a used M5 now. Bonkers.

If he's impressed by a 320d, a 550i would blow him away!

An M5 would be overkill, or perhaps just kill him one way or another, in the pocket if nothing else!

He'd have to try both I'd guess, I'm sure he would prefer the 550i over an M5 as would most people I'd hazzard a guess.

Then again, the 550i is no M5.

What budget do you think he has in mind, and more to the point, if he's "No speedster" why on earth is he even considering these depreciation nightmares?

A New 528i would be more than enough I'd guess, or an old (e60) 530i if he's not thinking of 40ish k?

And whilst he dislikes diesels, has he driven a 535d? My old man (an avid diesel hater) has completely changed his views of the DERV after having one a while back.

Fox... i agree with you. I'm trying to get him to get a more sensible car with lots of goodies, such as the 535i, tried the diesel route but hes having none of it. He was sniffing around a 2008 M5, hasn't had a go in a 550i yet. Hes looking to buy in about 2-3 months and about 55k tops.

Dude, more money than sense. Hes not impressed by the speed (LOL?) of my 320D just likes the handling. He does drive a fairly quick motor and every now and again impresses me with his driving ability for a 60yr old dude, he loves his quick motors ever since i've known him and has always had one.

If he drops £55k on a used M5, I hope his other investments were better made!

Its his money though & good luck to him. :)

Edit: - Missed your above post.

More money than sense? well, I can't say much to that, as I know what I'd do in his shoes! :o - and it would not be sensible! :D

:D I'd say go for it :D

Hes actually never done this for me as he thinks somethings wrong with me liking my dervs (or bags of nails, truck engines, transit engines, smoke machines, ear killers etc.. as he calls them)

Well, i think hes seeing some sense, looking at a 540i M Sport on Friday, 56 plate with 29000 on the clock for 20k advertised.

More like it imo!

And no doubt, with a subtle reminder from his son, he'll enjoy his large saving with a decent family holiday..... ;)

Report back mate....:D
