I have decided to upgrade my 4890 and I was wondering which of the GeForce 460 or 470s on special offer was the best shout.

I was leaning towards the MSI 470 here for £179.99:

But some of the higher end overclocked 460s are a similar price like this MSI 460 for the same price :

Where am I best off spending my money?

The gigabyte is clocked at 630mhz, tbh, any 470 should reach a lot further than this on stock volts, i have the gigabyte oc version, clocked at 750mhz on stock voltage, that impressed i bought another one of them.

your psu shouldnt be a problem. SLI yes single no.

Gigabyte Msi POV evga, same crap different sticker.

The Msi does claim 'Military class components'. Dont know if all the cards are the same.

■Military Class Components
- Hi-C Cap provides more precise GPU voltage and has better stability.
- SSC (Solid State Chock) for No Buzz noise.
- All Solid CAP for longer lifespan

Theyre loud above 65% fan speed, though on auto fan mine hits the mid 50's, temps at 77-82c, no noise and those temps are safe enough.

Agreed, how often do you hear of military class equipment being described as good, i have a few friends who are soldiers, they call mil spec suff mil ****

Murphys laws of combat, remember that your weapon was built by the cheapest bidding contractor.

Personally i think it's marketing gimmick speak.:D

Just how noisy are these? I am taking a look at the Radeon 6870 as well now...

Loud is extremely subjective, so it doesn't always mean much getting another person's opinion on sound. Best you can do is work relatively, a 6870 will be a fair amount quieter than a 470. A 460 should be fairly quiet compared to a 470 depending on if it's got a stock cooler or not. If you want a 470 though, you best buy soon as they're taking a sharp rise in price soon. Don't buy a 460 for the same price you can get a 470 or 6870 though as the latter two will be better.

Agree with kylew, the 470's are geting a price increase on the 14th, (£20.00 iirc), i ordered my second tonight to avoid the price hike, few less beer this weekend though, but im sure it will be money well spent.:D

New update

Update: Nvidia was kind enough to inform us that the claims regarding the price update aren't true. Igor Stanek, Product PR Manager EMEAI informed us that :"Any claims that our pricing update is temporary are patently false. The price adjustments we made are not temporary, and are reflective of an upcoming change in our product lineup."

We are quite sure the e-mail that we've received came from a legit source and we did say that Nvidia might continue with these prices after the November 14th. According to the statement from Nvidia, the new prices are here to stay. We apologize for any inconvenience our report might have caused you.

The Gigabyte GTX 460 SOC (815core/4000mem) available for <£160 would be my choice. Similar performance out of the box to the 470 but runs MUCH cooler and quieter.

If you overclock, the 470 will ultimately be faster but it will create a lot of heat and noise for gains which only benchmarks will notice. 460 also scales slightly better if you are considering SLI as a future upgrade option.
