OK, so my friend has passed his driving test recently and is very young (17) he is going to get a car and it is a brand new 2010 Seat Ibiza 1.2, it costs £10k and insurance is about £2k.

Fair enough if he loves cars but what he said after that was very strange. He said he wants a new car so he can keep it for 10+ years:confused: He also said that all I want is a car that keeps me dry and gets me from point A to B. Then why spend £10K!

I know him well enough and I told him he will get bored of it way before that(but he disagrees), also £10k for a first car is a lot and that he should save his money buy a car for £1-2k and save that money for a better car in the future.

He thought I was stupid.

If he's going to keep it for 10 years then fine.

My mate still has his Almera (brand new) from when he first passed his test 10 years ago. He's also got a 350Z though :)

FAIL

In all likelihood he'll prang it within a couple of years. Buy something more disposable, then get his shiny new SEAT in a couple of years.

I also asked him if he thinks it will be his primary car in 10 years time, he said yes.:p

Good for him... but 10 years is a hell of a long time.

...and yes, he is stupid IMO. I backed my first car into a wall and I got off light compared to most of the people in sixth form who passed at 17. So easy to make a daft mistake when you first start driving.

Magic Boy has it spot on. You want your first car to be disposable because NCD is far too important at that age to give it away making a claim unless you have to (others are involved).

Yes, pretty stupid.

A friend of a freind of mine just bought a brand new special edition 1.2 Corsa for 11K + his old 2002 Corsa , at the same time that he was starting university

All I could say was.."what?"

What is even more stupid is that I said to him, Ignoring insurance and costs, which would you rather have a 6-8 year old BMW E46 M3 or that SEAT, he said the SEAT because it is new.

Well there isnt anything wrong with that in itself - not everyone wants or needs the performance and huge running costs associated with something like a 6-8 year old M3.

'You could have a much much older X for the price of that new Y' is never a convincing argument as nobody who would consider a new Y would want a much older X.

£10,000 in savings by the age of 17 through working during holidays when you've only been eligable to legally work for just over a year is some going.

Somehow I think the legal bit is perhaps where he's managed this....

As in not very.....

He might, my brother got sick of problems with cars so bought a Kia on a 7 year warranty, he plans to keep it for 5 years and sell it on.

I'm not sure on the benefit of keping a seat for 10 years though, bet it goes after 3 years.
