Guys

I installed one of these into my 2010 MBP 13" the other week but now I can hear a faint humming/vibration when using the laptop, it was silent before as far as I can remember, if I add some light pressure to the right hand side of the trackpad it seems to go away?

Not sure if it's the drive or the bay that's the issue, don't really want to take the back off again, but I will if I have to, I did make sure everything was secure prior to putting the cover back on :(

Any advice would be handy..

Thanks

I noticed a slight hum with my stock 5400rpm HDD, so i imagine an upgrade to a 7200rpm one would end up being decently noisy.

If you're that bothered, go for an SSD :p

As above really it just sounds like a natural consequence of having a faster spinning drive in there. Any change in frequency is always going to risk vibrating something it didn't before. I'd reseat the drive to see if it helps.

Ditto what the others have said.

I changed the 160GB 5400RPM (stock drive) in my 2007 MBP with a 500GB 7200RPM drive. The 7200RPM drive is noticeably louder, but noticeably faster too.

Funnily enough the 256GB SSD in my MacBook Air is silent as a silent thing! :p

i have a 32go WD 720rpm in one of mine and would say i dont get that hum, vibration people are saying i would take it out and reinstall it make sure you use the gubbins the older had grommits etc ..

make sure its seated correctly, but i also have SSD in another and no problem obviously VEEY happy with it just space hence i use 500WD external usb on it.

but id recheck its mountings

So guys I'm thinking of whacking an SSD into my MBP 13" now so whats the best I can get for a budget of £150 - £200?

Thanks

what because of a hum ?

the fact that pressing the right side down stops the humming proves that the 'humming' is caused by the hard drive vibrating against the casing

i used a few terribly thin strips of rubber to stop mine

My mac has a developed a weird hum recently too (I have a c300 inside so there's not movement from the hard drive). I think its the fans from using smfc fan control but im not really too sure....

Atleast your not getting a whirling sound, like it needs a bit of oil sprayed on a rusty door jar!

This is what my Seagate is doing at the moment in the Mini, giving me a slight concern.

Will check again, but thinking of treating my MBP to an SSD now anyway :)

Find a Intel 160Gb G2 for £200. I found one for £220 3 months ago so im sure you can do it too ;)

Edit: Also < £200 second hand.

Many thanks ;)
