Installed it today after buying it off the Members Market from Ace Modder.

Messing about with MSi Afterburner, the card just crashes after a few seconds even on desktop after trying to overclock.

Using 885/1300 from a guide on a different site and after a few seconds I need to re-start the PC. Voltage is untouched at 1049.

Any ideas?

To what? The guide doesn't say. I'm also getting temps around 80C which seems a bit high :(

i use 1.2v for 950/1200, so try anything less. it seems to scale badly in terms of voltage, i.e. you could get away with much less for 885, but going to 950 you need a fair bump. i can't even get mine stable at 1000 with 1.3v (and i'm watercooled)

Seems OK on 885/1300 with 1.2V, tried 950 on air and crashed after about 3 minutes. The card is working fine but is 80C under load normal for a 5970? Though they hovered around 60-70 :/

For my 5970 I have these profiles set in MSI AB. These were setup originally with the stock cooler with a custom fan profile and just about contains temperatures for profile 4 but very loud :( .. the other profiles were perfectly fine noise wise though. With the stock fan profile the card hit 96c regularily on any decent overclock but was around 80c on complete stock settings. I now have an Accelero Extreme as the fan started to screech and max temp now is 70c for profile 4 with Vsync off and is hardly loud but is audible. When I do not need the extra oomph or want quietness I use one of the other profiles and VSync on where max temp gets to about 50c for profile 2 (inaudible over case fans)!! I have also modded the BIOS to set the RAM to 1.2v, saves me having to use a utility to do it which is a pain! 1315MHz is max that AB lets me set the RAM.

These are my tried and tested stable profiles (after many hours of gaming ..):

1: 1049mv, 810MHz, 1315MHz (Stock core volts, overclocked)
2: 1000mv, 750MHz, 1315MHz (under volted core & overclocked!)
3: 1149mv, 900MHz, 1315MHz
4: 1237mv, 950MHz, 1315MHz

After a while of having issues I now assign each profile to a hot key combo and have CCC overdrive switched off so I keep proper ATI power reduction kicking in .. it idles around 30c for desktop use.

I would say 80°C is OK for a 5970, all depends on your air flow inside your case. If you want to run cooler you need to up your fan speed

80 degrees sounds perfectly fine for a HD5970 under load. A HD5870 can hover anywhere between 60 and 80 degrees under load but the dual gpu HD5970 will always run hotter.

The biggest problem with the stock cooler is that the more you push it the earlier the clock speed throttling kicks in to control temperatures and the louder the fan gets. I could hit high clocks but it wasn't worth using them on a day to day basis, especially as the card isn't quiet to start with.
