Is my friend stupid?

You're friend sounds like someone who has no interest in cars, and just views them as a metal box which gets you from A to B. So trying to say to him, you could get X,Y, or Z, instead of this, or get X and you'll get sick of that then get Y, won't get through to him.

Leave him to make his own mistake, he isn't going to listen to you, he has his blinkers on a £10k 1.2 SEAT, and a mystical value of £2k insurance. And when it comes to around 2 or 3 years time, when he's sick of wringing the neck of a 1.2 car, and want's something better, you can go "told you so".

The only exception to this is if it's somebody else's car (i.e. mum's/dad's).
 
My dad got a car at 27, and has had it for the past 22 years. To put that into perspective: I'm 20 :p

It has never been his daily driver mind....

So its possible, but not at 17 imo

No I haven't managed to persuade him out of it:(

and his parents are paying for it, he says he isn't loaded, and that he is very average, even though they bought a brand new car for his sister and a house for her.

I'd take the house to be honest. If he's going to keep it for 5 years, fine... But I suspect he'll be bored much sooner

I would have been super happy with my parents just actually buying me a car when i was 17, let alone a brand new 10k one!
 
I couldn't take that much money from my parents, it's about self respect. If they were adamant they wanted to buy me a car, I'd be looking at only spending enough to get something suitable
 
If he's got money to burn then why not.

A guy at my school learned to drive in a Jaguar XJS Convertible. (His family were rather well off!).

Being stupid is putting a brand new car on finance.
