Hi all
I just built a core i7 machine:
Asus P6X58D-E
2x 6GB (3x2GB) Corsair XMS3
Intel Core i7 950

All fine, 12GB RAM recognised by BIOS and windows.
I overclocked it to 4GHz and everything was fine, started ramping down the voltage and found a stable CPU voltage. Ran prime95 for a few hours and then noticed the RAM had dropped to 8GB.
Put the overclock back to stock speeds (everything on auto) - also tried XMP setting (the ram is xmp) and not change. CPU-Z reports slots 1 and 2 are empty, although memtest86+ shows them as fine and in there.

What have i done? How can I undo it!

It's a common problem sometimes caused by weak memory sticks, is your memory overclocked at all?

There's been a few threads about this in the past and RMAing the memory usually fixed it.

I had this on my Rampage III when overclocking - at 2000 the memory would only show as 8Gb, once I dropped the mem speed down to 1866 and input the default timings it re-appeared as 12Gb.

Left it at 1866 and had no problems since.

I haven't had chance to check them out individually, but they work intermittently.
Sometimes I'll boot with 8, sometimes with 12. I've dropped the overclock back to stock speeds.

its unusual that 2 sticks have died,
have you checked the sticks individually?

Regards Sam

Not died, it's just occasionally some sticks don't work at the rated frequency so they drop out.

If they all work ok at slower speeds then it's probably some weak sticks.
