Hey guys,

A mate of mine is looking at getting a laptop for under £500. It's mainly for uni work, watching movies and wants to be able to play the latest football manager game.

He was looking at these 2:

http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/deals1/fs.aspx?refid=deals1&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&~ck=mn - The one for £429.

Are either of these good options, or anyone have any other recommendations?

Thanks v much.

Acer Aspire Timeline would be a good choice if you don't need a seriously powerful laptop. I recently bought an Asus Ul30a for uni because of its 10hr battery life. Has a dual core ulv processor like the timeline but this one is 1.2ghz. Runs football manager 11 fine in the 2d top down pitch mode. 3d mode is slightly choppy but still good enough but I prefer the 2d mode anyway

how much did you pay for the UL30A? :)

Depends if he wants a 15'', or ultra portable. Any i3 based laptop will play what he wants, will come with a optical drive, and a nice 1366 x 768p screen.

The problem with 13'' notebooks is that they lack a DVD drive (And they have smaller screens :)). If he does want to bring his laptop to work during the days, then the lack of optical drive isn't really a big deal considering the weight + battery + size + price advantage of a Timeline 3810TZG / Travelmate 8371 / UL30A. You can always get a USB external drive, for around £20-£30, and have a great laptop for using all across the campus.

EDIT : Me, I paid £350 for my UL30A. :) If I waited a bit longer, I'd definitely would have gone with one of the two Acers above.
