Recently moved to Bristol and just wanted some information on the rubbish collections. Checked the Bristol council website and what I have experienced so far doesn't match what it says...

Am I right in saying that the big black wheelie bins are collected fortnightly with 22/11/10 being the next collection (Montpelier if it counts).

According to the website, if I want cardboard recycled I just leave it in the street and it gets collected....but it isn't really clear when it is collected? With the wheelie bin or is it done with the black box?

When is the black recycling box collected?

Thanks to anyone that can fill me in.

Yep, the wheelie bin is fortnightly. The black box, food waste bins and any card board should be collected weekly on the same day (a Monday going by the 22nd). Just stick it out the night before.

Thanks for the information.

Are they pikicty about the cardboard collection and will only collect it if you have stripped all the selotape and stuff off it? I mean I have taken most of it off but there will probably get some left....

I've left cardboard with tape on it out without any issues.

One thing to keep in mind is make sure you separate your recycling into cardboard/tins/jars, some bin men will just ignore your box if they have to separate it out themselves, something I can kinda understand.

That's odd, because I just leave my garbage out every week and it's always taken away. We don't have wheelie bins, we have to bag up the stuff and leave it out by the pavement.

This varies so much around the UK. In Nottinghamshire, we have 3 wheelie bins, a 'normal' bin a garden waste bin and a blue bin for recycling cardboard, tins and plastic. We do not have a glass collection in the county area but the city area does.

Biggest problem I have with our collection is when they don't completely empty the food waste bin. I used to wrap everything in newspaper but now I use the compostable bags. It doesn't stop one sticking to the bottom and getting missed though.

Also, for some reason they don't always take any bagged up batteries from the black box. I think sometimes they get new people who don't always know what they should collect.

As I am having a moan, why can't they leave your bins next to your gate where you put them? I crushed one recycling box because I didn't see it thrown under the front of our van :D
