HTC Desire HD (Ace)

How are you getting on with yours Robbie?

I'm getting on with it well, I'm really liking it so far. But then I've only come from a Nokia 6500 so it was never going to take very much to impress me :p.

Obvious gripe is - battery life is really not good. But then that large bright LCD sucks it away like nobody's business. I'm actually quite impressed with the screen, but then I valued screen size over quality for ease of browsing. In a couple of years when AMOLEDs are (hopefully) rife across the board, I'll worry about the screen, but until then, the phone is so far impressing me in every way but for the above (albeit significant) points.

No regrets, and I've played extensively with plenty of SGSs and iPhone 4s including a side by side comparison.

How's everyone handling ringtones and vibrate? Both seem fairly pathetic and easily missed. Having a song as ringtone seems a definite no as to faint.

GF asked me how she could bluetooth over her contacts to new iphone - i laughed... Later played some tunes over youtube and the iphone speaker easily drowns out the DHD from other side of room. Her turn to laugh. :D

Mine should hopefully arrive tomorrow, then I can see how it holds up against the Omnia7 and iPhone 4. I much prefer the Omnia to the iPhone to be honest with you, if Microsoft can get the right Apps flowing and market it properly, they aren't going to have a problem when if comes to beating the iPhone, its impressive stuff!

Edit: Just got an email from mobiles saying its out of stock, I expect they will get more later in the week though.

Balls.

Battery life still isn't looking great. 4th recharge cycle, screen @ 50% brightness and the only thing synced is HTC sense.

Unplugged from power at 8:30am it is now 2:22pm. I have made two 5 minute calls and the another 15 minute call, surfed the internet for around 30 minutes and sent 6 texts.

I am down to 59% battery capacity remaining

It is painful watching the battery readings drop so quickly, sigh.

Barely heard the phone ring when out on lunch, it is inside the official pouch which does a good job at absorbing the already low volume ring from the phone.

Love the phone apart from the rubbish battery life and the quiet speaker.

The screen quality really put me of getting the HD as well, especially after looking at this picture :(

2 delivery batches for ordered & reserved phones arrived today at my local CPW but mine wasn't included :( Apparently because the order for the phone was placed in the afternoon on Friday, it means it wasn't sent until Saturday so which means it will not arrive until tomorrow or Wednesday at the very latest! Really hope it arrives tomorrow!

Well I took the plunge and got a Desire HD….I’m with Vodafone who would not do anything at all deal wise until I asked for my PAC then retentions team gave me deal below –

Free Phone
600mins
Unlimited TXT's
1GB of internet (This is two 500Mb packages stuck together or something...)
Unlimited Vodafone calls (Not likely to use much but still nice to have)
£30 a month for 24 months

I know its not cheapest I can get but it’s easy and I don’t have to worry about web being slow with the 3rd party T-Mobile web bolt on issues.....

Such a shame people judge the screen on an internet photo. The DHD screen is great, much better than my iPhone 3G. I compared it to a friends Desire and besides the Desire looking more contrasty there's no real difference in picture quality.

I'm very picky and have no problem with the DHD's screen at all.

Lol, it's not just one photo, there are a number of photos and videos and expert reviews as well as user reviews who have stated that the screen quality is not very good when compared to most of the other mobile screens out there, they have stated that "the screen does look very washed out when compared to them" (also down to it just being SLCD and not and AMOLED), even some guy on this forum who had the nexus 1 said that it doesn't look anywhere as good as the nexus 1 screen, although he preferred having the larger display etc. and doesn't care too much either about the quality of it.

Personally for me I would much rather have a better display than a bigger screen, as I have stated before for me it is about the quality, not the quantity, however the screen would have to be bigger than 3.2" for me.

Also saying that in all honesty I actually think that my samsung spica screen looks better in terms of quality when compared to the desire HD screen in terms of the colours etc.

However people have different expectations, so some might like the bigger screen and don't care about the quality and vice versa etc.

However saying that I am sure that the HD screen is still very impressive and won't be an issue for most people, especially if they are upgrading from just a normal standard mobile.

For me the screen is one of the most important factors when considering hardware/mobiles etc. as you pretty much use the screen all the time, always looking at it etc. and I would want it to look the best that it can, not to be downgrading in terms of that.

So each to their own.

Has anyone had an issue with their screen not turning off after the set period? mine is now staying on all the time regardless of the time limit i have given it, only way to make the screen go off is to use it in a phone call or press the porn button at the top to lock it : /

Check you're not running an app that prevents screen dim.

On the screen again...the most annoying thing about it (apart from the battery life) is that the whole screen remains bright when you're using it as a desk clock at night, making it hard to sleep.

DHD vs SGS. Both on 100% brightness.

The SGS is better side-by-side, but not as much as you'd think, and certainly the difference is negligible when they're not directly next to each other. Plus I'd take the extra screen space any day :).

Still waiting for my DHD, supposedly got scheduled for delivery today, but nothing. Plan has been changed and contract extended, expecting it tomorrow i guess...

The SGS screen has unquestionably better contrast, but at the end of the day its not like the HD has a 'poor' screen, its just not LED.

The only real downside to SAMOLED is that its hard to read small text on it due to the pixel mapping (or whatever it is).
