Imagine youve never played a lot of RPG's..

which ones would you recommend to people who havnt played many RPG games?

old ones are welcome too, doesnt have to be all shiny and DX11, would prefer them to work on windows 7 though

Diablo II + the expansion
Titan Quest + the expansion
Oblivion
Dragon Age Origins

The above are all fantasic games, I've spent well over 100 hours in each of them. 3 end-game offline characters in Diablo II, did have about 5 end-game online characters, 4 end-game characters in Titan Quest, completed Oblivion + DLC & completed Dragon Age + the DLC.

Please ignore what people say about Titan Quest and give it a go for yourself. There is a demo & you can pick it up for next to nothing these days. It's not being made anymore so you might have to get it 2nd hand, or if you're lucky from somewhere that still has stock.

There's also Dungeon Siege which I really enjoyed, especially the party aspect of things (you manage & level up more than one character). However, I found that for some reason nothing pulled me into playing the higher difficulties. Still well worth a play though.

I do have The Witcher Enhanced & Fallout 3 which I can see major potential in, but am finding them hard to get into for some reason. The exact same thing happened with Oblivion: bought it, didn't play it for about a year as I couldn't get into it, then played it and couldn't believe what I had missed out on!

One game I'm gutted about is Gothic IV. The demo was absolutely brilliant, would have been my next favourite game, however it sounds like the full game is a few releases back and pretty buggy.

Most of the good ones have already been mentioned. I've just finished Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga and that was pretty fun. More of an action-rpg though.

Forgot some:
Torchlight
Legend: Hand of God
Drakensang - I've only played the demo myself, but I stupidly didn't buy it when it came out and now it's not really in stock anywhere for some reason :(

I still don't agree with Diablo/Titans Quest/Torchlight being classed as RPGs.

They are hack n slash dungeon crawlers with RPG elements of levels/experience/loot. They lack the storylines and characterisation that is what makes RPGs for me.

Mass effect 2 and fall out 3 are must owns Dragon age origins is my fav rpg.

MMo you must play eve online and wow.

Have a look around on steam and around the internet to try and find demos of some if you want to have a try. Quite a few wont have them but it wouldnt hurt to try and find some that do to give them a try. I know Deus Es, SS2 and a few others. if you can find them then give it a go before spending your money.

thanks again for the replies.
ive played torchlight also, and agree its a fantastic little game, cant wait for the sequel.
i bougth fallout 3 but just couldnt get into it, which is weird as i played oblivion at a friends house and that was alright, as i think theyre made by the same company?
tempted to play through kotor again but will also look for some of the demo's of these mentioned, i forgot all about demo's! ;)

I have a very patchy history of RPGs but i'd like to point out the following games:

Baldurs Gate 1+2, i saw a post recently where you can get a modded merged version with the 2 games in one or something.

Mass Effect, I have allways been a bit of a sci fi nut and this game has one of the best storylines ever for me (I have not finishes ME2 yet shame on me!)

Final Fantasy 7. No idea if this is on PC but has one of my favourite game moments ever.

World of Warcraft /runs and hides

But seriously, its a good time to get into it as there is the new expansion in a month and there will be lots of re-rollers...

If you're after more traditional affair - Baldur's Gate 1+2/Knights of the Old Republic/The Witcher/Fallout 1+2/Vampire:The Masquerade - Bloodlines [ignore Redemption]/Drakensang

Modern Style RPGs - Mass Effect 1+2/Dragon Age/Morrowind+Oblivion/Fable/Fallout3

Hack and Slash - Diablo series/Torchlight/TitanQuest/Dungeon Seige

There are other really good RPGs out there too, like some of the Divinity and Gothic series, or even blend titles like Deus Ex and STALKER but I think perhaps this is enough of a list already and has some of what you'd consider the modern classics, stuff like NWN doesn't make the grade, as simply put they weren't as good as Baldur's Gate despite coming after from the same dev :D

Pick a few of these though and providing they're 'your thing' you won't go wrong. The traditional ones I've put in bold are personal recommendations, if you're after traditional fair, they're all amongst the best, but as this thread shows, there are plenty of classics worth looking at :)

If you don't believe our opinions, check out http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/genre/metascore/role-playing/pc? although beware some of the listings being incorrect/stilted due to magazines padding review scores etc.
ME2 for example is NOT second best RPG ever on PC, in many ways its inferior to the first as an RPG.

Planescape: Torment offers a much deeper and darker experience then most RPG's. It is a fantastic game and I would highly recommend it.

I think the best era for RPG's were late 90's early 00'.

Other games to mention:

Arcanum
Fallout 1+2
Baldurs Gate series
Icewind Dale (more combat orientated)

As the games are quite old now you should also check the mod scene, not just for compatibility fixes but also the incredible following and unofficial work that has been done.

Aye, Planescape and Baldur's Gate are really sometimes seen as the pinnacles of traditional CRPG, often with good reason, and you're right, the mod/conversion work on them far outlived the original titles.

I think this quote from a BG2 review kinda sums it up to some extent
"Before Mass Effect, before any of the many other BioWare masterpieces, this game made NPCs interesting. For that I give them a 10/10. Also, the rest of the game was outstanding in almost every way. "Minsc and Boo stand ready."

In fact, that games and gamers still reference Miniature Giant Space Hamsters and 'GO FOR THE EYES, BOO!' says it all :D

Not for PC, but it is on playstation / portable. Disgaea.

The first one is a good game, especially if you have a PSP since you can skip special attacks (special attacks are cutscenes that take up 90% of your play time :D).

Disgaea 2 wasn't very good. Disgaea 3 is supposedly very good.

Star Wars : Knights of the old Republic
Fallout 3
The Witcher
Mass Effect

Just really voicing most peoples opinions as always, though they're well made games and possibly my favorite PC RPG's. their will be some I've missed also.

OOOH, Deus Ex!

some might say Stalker as well, though I found it boring.

I still don't agree with Diablo/Titans Quest/Torchlight being classed as RPGs.

Don't worry I think you're in the majority there. Never heard Diablo reffered to as an RPG until this thread :)
