470 sli or 6870 CF

Are you purposefully ignoring those performance graphs Rroff? Considering you were saying how SLi is ahead of Crossfire and those graphs prove you wrong. If SLi was ahead then the GTX470 SLi would be beating 6870 crossfire every time considering you also state the GTX470 to be faster than a 6870. 6870 crossfire is either ahead of 470 SLi, or within 1FPS of it...

Stock run - no optimisations, 16x AA with high quality texture filtering, full quality AF, etc. in the drivers.

Even with a heavy (800MHz) overclock it doesn't get to 96C in crysis.

EDIT: Granted my top card is a good low leakage card but even so the bottom one is fairly representative of an average 470 temps.

EDIT2: 800MHz run peaks at 91C and stabalises at 88C on both cards.

This makes me laugh... have you ever used or owned a pair of GTX470 SLI? I can put my hand on my heart and say I've used both options and can tell you for a fact that GTX470 SLI is not that noisey and definitely gives up the performance to make it worth the heat and power use.

Which Ati / 3dfx / matrox / powervr card have u owned?
Come on date and model?

Hmmmm u have jumped from one Nvidia card to another massive bias. And now ur giving the TS a skewed opinion about 470gtx.

If you really want to know cards I've actually owned myself:

ATI Rage II 3D+ somewhere around 1996
Voodoo 1 - 1997
ATI Rage Fury 32MB - 1999 (thik I had a rage pro somewhere in there just before)
Riva TNT2 Ultra - 1999 (coz the ATI card was ****)
Voodoo 3 2000 PCI (to drive extra displays) circa 2000.
GeForce 2 (The original Else Gladiac OC'd one) (can't remember date)
Creative 3D Blaster GeForce 3 Ti200. (can't remember date)
GeForce 5900XT (Gainward golden sample - only thing that kept me going through those dark times)
ATI Radeon Mobility in my laptop can't remember model but basically same specs as vanilla 9600 cards - overclocked like crazy but drivers were horrendous.
GeForce 6800 GS (Another gainward special edition with 512MB DDR3 basically ultra extreme spec) 2005 or 2006 ish.
GeForce 7950GX2
8800GT (SLI)
GTX260 (SLI)
ATI 4870 - got it for nought in return for fixing and upgrading someones PC - given away once I'd done benchmarking it.
nVidia GTX260m - in my laptop
ATI Imageon 230 (I'll leave you to find out what this is :D)
Intel 4500 - again laptop
GTX470 (SLI)

I've also missed out various Intel GMA solutions including 810 and 915 and probably half a dozen other GPUs that don't come to mind right now.

Well! That definitely makes you impartial then!

I'm not going to pretend I'm not biased against nVidia, I can't stand the company, but I don't pretend their cards are crap and they can't make drivers which is something all nVidia fanboys say.

With my dislike of nVidia aside, it's not exactly easy to recommend them to anyone buying a new GPU anyway as they've often got poor value for money at similar performance points.

As I said - never pretended to be impartial, I think anyone with an open mind will find my advice tends to somewhat more objective than fanboy tho.

right if we take out the cards that
A) havent bought
B) that are not cards anyway because they are pre-installed on a laptop

Thats very poor, you havent had a single card apart from Nvidia since Geforce 2. Some 10 years you have been running Nvidia on your desktop for 3d and 2d cards.
And yet you trying to give a poster a unbiased opinion?

I had no end of problems with my 4870x2 and the crap drivers that was before it went faulty. I picked up a 470 as i have heard they are good. Cannot wait to try her out tomoz.

Have you owned a 6870 or a 470 in cf and sli respectively. You should follow your own advice.

Nice edit by the way, scared it was pushing it ?

That proves that it is factual that ATi drivers simply don't work. It's not like the same happens to people with nVidia cards is it? Right? What would you do if you had driver problems with the 470? Stick to Intel GMA GPUs only?

Impartial and objective mean pretty much the same thing, you are neither.

A lot more impartial and objective by a long long way than many here who are trying to hide behind the guise of being impartial - and quite blatantly haven't owned or used either solution.

personally Im very happy wth my 6870 cf setup along with the dell 3011 Im using at the moment

The main reason I didnt go nvidia is that I wanted full hdmi audio support and I prefer cooler running cards, and its always nice playing with something new (rather than a speedbumped card thats been around quite a while)

Right now performance is pretty good - and hopefully new drivers will increase that performance in time :)

objective [əbˈdʒɛktɪv]adj 1. (Philosophy) existing independently of perception or an individual's conceptions are there objective moral values?
2. undistorted by emotion or personal bias

Come on Rroffle, the opposite of objective is biased, which you've admitted to, so you're not objective.
