I am tthinking of Christmas present for a good friend of mine who has an Xbox360, but not many games. My current thoughts lean towards Mass Effect 1+2 and Oblivion. Any other "classic" type "must have" games that I am completely forgetting? He likes games like Halo, Call of Duty, Fallout 3 - that type of thing.

Dead Rising 2 is miles better than the first one. Really addictive and very playable, not too difficult. Best game I've played this year

Batman : Arkham Asylum
Splinter Cell : Conviction

Two great games in my opnion that can be picked up cheap. He may also like Assassins Creed 2.

What about Fallout : New Vegas?

Aye. I've poured a terrifying amount of hours into that game. Just totted it up and it coms to 115 hours - nearly 5 solid days.

Burnout Paradise is good if you want a considerably less serious racing game. It's beautiful to look at too.

Batman: Arkham Asylum, as mentioned, is brilliant. One of the few games I've bothered to play through twice. Gonna make a third run through soon.

Splinter Cell: Double Agent is pretty good, if you like that sort of thing.

You're spoilt for choice if you like shooters - Halo, Gears, loads of others.

If your friend hasn't played Mass Effect 1 or 2 then definitely get your friend those games. Those two right there are amongst the best games I've played this generation.

I think you're thinking of Left 4 Dead (and L4D2). You can play it offline.

Dead Rising (and DR2) is basically Dawn Of The Dead in video game format. It's also reputedly brutally hard.
Dead rising 2 is pretty easy (in comparison), the first one is hard because the survivors have the intelligence of a freshly salted slug, they fixed it in the second one.

Games I'll never trade in are
Mass Effect 1&2
Splinter cell conviction
Alan Wake
Gears of war 2
Dead rising 1&2
Fallout 3 & New vegas
Red dead redemption
Borderlands
Fable 2 (and probably 3 when I get it)

Not saying they're everyone's must haves but I've played a lot of games and these have never been in danger of getting traded in.

Batman: AA- compelling storyline, great action & smatterings of satisfying fighty humour.

Resident Evil 5- gripping, cheesy, fun & great co-op!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare- If you have not played this already then it's well worth picking up a cheap copy for the singleplayer (I'm sure the multiplayer still has an active base too!)

Bioshock / Bioshock 2
Fable 2
Gears of war / Gears of war 2
Oblivion Game of Year edition
Orange box
Forza 3
Mass effect 1 + 2
Halo series
Assassins creed 2
Fallout 3
COD 4 Modern Warfare
Bad Company 2
GTA IV
Red Dead Redemption
