Been an idiot, went into the back of someone

You can cancel your claim. Phone to say you've changed your mind -

I did this when someone bumped into me last year, they guy decided he wanted to settle out of insurance due to not a great deal of damage.

However, when i came to insure my latest car, it was down on the insurance database as a crash and even though no money actually changed hands or cars were repaired, i was still stung :(

If you tell rozzers
They "may" book you for driving without due care and attention.
Silly as it sounds, I do know coppers that will do just that.

I would hope they would see the £1000+ its costing me as enough. However I wouldn't argue, I was driving without due care and attention, if I had I would have stopped in time, simple.

Been into a local accident repairer and a rough estimate is £2-3K, problem is the headlights have twisted and the connecters broken, so provably at least one of them will need replacing, looks like it's through the insurance then!

Well you need to find out what your insurance will be like with 0 NCB and a crash, might end up being cheaper in the long run to take the few K on the chin if it saves you an extra £600 for the next 5 years in insurance.

Why are people automatically thinking that because he doesn't want to go through the insurance or get the police invloved for a minor bump he must be uninsured!?

Some people just don't want to hassle of increased preimums and having to deal with the Police. I know I wouldn't unless you completely ruined my car.

While that may be true generally, in this case, the way he behaved from the outset and the manor in which he said it made it pretty clear. I would bet good money on him having at least no insurance.

As for costs, having run the next 5 years through moneysupermarket, assuming no more crashes it will cost a total of £2100 extra. However I think it still makes sence to claim, it only costs me £200 now, giving me another 8 months (when the poilcy expires) to save up the extra cash I might need. Also I can reduce the amount if I need to by moving down to a cheaper to insure car.

Really hate how I have spend thousands of pounds building up my NCB, while many of my friends pay less (this year a friend the same age as me passed her test, and paid less for that years insurance as I did, when I had 3 years more experience and 2 years NCB and a similar car, how is that fair?). I make one mistake and I've got to start again, get shafted for £2000 on top of the already stupid prices (£1500+) and probably spend the next few years in a far from desirable car. Ahh! /rant

Still not seeing how it remotely makes sense to claim, but do what you've got to do.

I've got my doubts that you've done £2100 worth of damage to your car from your description on the accident, but hey.

Question. If the other party has no insurance he may well deny the whole thing could this not result in a fault claim becoming a no fault claim for ten op if the other guy shouldn't have been on the road in the first place?

Dod he slam his brakes on overly harder than required it might end up your I surers contest liability and the insurance ombudsman picks up the tab as he is uninsured?

Just a off on a tangent thought

Cancel your claim, get your car fixed by a half decent bodyshop. Max it will cost you is £500. You wont have to worry about increased insurance costs, but you might have to anyway as you've already told them you've had a crash. Silly thing to do, but we all learn from our mistakes.

I don't know, but I would be surprised because:
a) Just because he shouldn't be on the road, doesn't mean I can drive through him
b) It makes no difference how quickly he stopped, I should have stopped too

Joshy: I appreciate the input, especially as this is the least dramatic/exciting "I crashed" thread evey :D However what makes you say its not going to be worth it? At this point 3 years NCB + crash vs 0 years NCB + crash is about £1000 over the 5 years, so that gives me £1200 to do the repairs, thats presuming the other guy wants nothing. The bodyshop today quoted £700 for parts, thats without replacing either headlight unit (if I'm unlucky and have to replace them, they are likely expensive as the are HID + cornering lights) or labour and thats not an insurance approved place
