Nvidia GTX 470 or Radeon HD 6870

Good thread and helps to answer my thoughts too, as soon I would like to upgrade my 4870 and was looking at both of these cards. I take it either one of these cards will be a nice jump up from my trusty 4870 (512).

nVidia GPUs work differently, they have independent core and shader clockspeeds.

Ok so i up the core to 750 and the shaders up 10mhz not the memory up 10mhz as the guy above says he put his core to 750 and memory up 10mhz?

or should i just leave the memory/shader and just put the core to 750?

When you up the core the shaders will be linked so will go up and down with the core frequency.

On the nvidia 400 series, the core and shader clocks are linked, as you raise the core the shader rises in line with it, ie at 751 core, my shader clock is at 1502, at stock 630 core the shader is at 1260.

Memory is a bit more fiddly* and as its not a great performance increase I'd leave it.

* Some cards will clock fairly well on the memory and other will barely go even 10MHz over stock before crapping out.

Ok thankyou very much il just do the core/shader

Didnt realise that no wonder my old 4850 died i added like 100mhz onto the memory! hehe

in the meantime do you know what (safe) clocks i can take my ati 4850 upto? the stock core is 625
