Planning my brothers stag do over there, I was keen for a hostel but these boys are a bit older (hitting 30) and keen just to get cheap hotel rooms, most likely 3 dudes in each room. Would most like a centralish location of course or somewhere fairly busy where there is lots to do (drink) and near a train station. Planning to get paintballing and banana bar on the go or something else depending on price as they're whinging about money apparently

Check out the Bulldog:

It is a hostel but is cheap, clean and friendly - I went there a few years ago in a small group for a stag do and we had a great time.
We stayed in a dorm but it was clean, warm and surprisingly quiet and they do private rooms as well, there's also a really nice lounge to chill out in to get over the hangovers in the morning and it's pretty central for the action in Amsterdam.

Be aware they say that they don't allow large groups on hen and stag trips, but we just didn't mention it and were fine (there were 5 of us).

Anymore suggestions? Bulldog looks pretty good and small group of us (6 so far) so wouldnt be too bad. Still I consider 36euros a night per person fairly steep, especially as people are whinging about cost already and I havent even booked the activities!

Even rubbish hotels have daily rates of 80euros and stuff, surely that cant be right?

€36 a night is pretty cheap considering you want somewhere centrally located and the Bulldog comes highly recommended by just about everyone I've met who's been to Amsterdam.

The only half decent place I can think of, off the top of my head, that's cheaper would be Shelter City. About €20 a night for a 12 person dorm, that includes a locker and breakfast. Doors close at 2am in the off season, stay open until 5am in the summer. It's run by Christians so they're not too keen on people rolling in ****faced and noisy at 2am.

Amsterdam is expensive. There's no getting away from that. You're looking at about €5 a pint.

20 of us stayed at bulldog for my mate's stag 1st wknd in sept and it was brilliant! It was cheap, clean, and importantly sells beer all night as well as allowing you partake of the local herbs - there are very few places that do both!

They do breakfast, have DJ's on till 4/5 and its right in the middle of the red light - in a word perfect!

The Flying Pig is a lot better than the Bulldog. It's in a better location (very very central, but on the city side of the canal not the red light side), cleaner and friendlier. Also my friend said that he felt safer at the Pig though I didn't notice much difference.
You can walk to the Bulldog from The Flying Pig in 3 minutes.

There's no two ways about it, Amsterdam is a very very expensive city.

Yes you can, but unless you're staying at the bulldog you can't get past security to get a late beer, and I doubt EVERYONE in the stag party is looking to smoke all day and night!!

If you think the dam is expensive try ibiza, the dam is half price!!

There's a lovely Best Western hotel just a tram ride away from Dam Square which is pretty reasonable. Me and the other half went for 5 nights in August last year for 230 each (including flights). We used lastminute.com

Also laterooms.com is pretty good for hotels.
