Had a little 'incident' in my car a few weeks ago and had most of the front passenger side wheel area replaced (suspension, wheel, wishbone, wheel bearing, bumper).

I've now found out after putting it back in the garage that the cause of the squeel I got going round left corners is due to a sticking caliper which has taken the pad to the metal and scored the disk.

So, is it worth getting uprated pads/disks or should I just stick with the OEM ford units?

I'd always heard the stock ST220 brakes were a bit lackluster really and that was certainly the impression i had when i test drove one, i hear focus ST front brakes are a common upgrade but don't know if its 'plug and play' or weather just uprated disks and pads would do.

No doubt someone will be along shortly to tell you that you need to upgrade to the Focus ST calipers/carriers in order not to die in a fiery ball of death, but I have no problem with the ST220's brakes for road use. They could perhaps bite better, but then again they're progressive and not over-assisted like most modern stuff. So just get OEM disks and either OEM pads or uprated pads (from the likes of EBC, etc) if you do want a bit more bite.

pads and disks I'm told are shot (although i may get away with the disks). Just got prices from ford near me. £129 for caliper, £96 for disks and £49 for pads. All plus VAT.

Ford told me £250 for discs and pads but I replaced them myself on an ST TDCi for about £60 from a local motorfactors. Easy enough job to do myself with pretty much 0 experience of this sort of thing. Couple of easy bolts and they just switched out.

No idea on caliper pricing however. Have you considered the Focus ST upgrade? Last time I looked (18months ago now) 2nd hand sets inclusive of discs and pads were going for £300 ish.

I'm assuming the ST forums are best place to look? Been calling around and I can get a caliper refurb kit for £30 and the disks skimmed for £30. Not sure it's worth skimming the disks as motor factors can do them for £50 (just called them). Not sure I fancy going with MF pads again though

I was asking about the calipers for a pad upgrade. Been looking around and the red stuffs are only around £20 more than OEM. Not sure on disks but I'm going to get a caliper refurb kit for £30

ST forums is where I saw most and if people on there didnt have them then they generally linked to ebay and other adverts.

A good other option is a breakers if they have a rear ended Focus ST. They are rare to find but some people have been lucky!
