Scotland Yard said the man was detained by Hampshire Police in Southampton. He is now travelling to London where he will be questioned by officers from the Metropolitan Police later

On Friday, a 23-year-old student at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, was arrested and then released on bail on suspicion of violent disorder.

A Met spokesman said: "This arrest follows an investigation into public disorder where a fire extinguisher was thrown from the roof of Millbank Tower."

Police Federation representatives have called for the person who flung the empty metal fire extinguisher to be charged with attempted murder. Senior officers said it narrowly missed injuring two territorial support group officers, brushing down the back of one and hitting the knees of another.

The incident was one of the defining moments of the four-hour stand-off last week after a breakaway group of students attacked the Millbank office complex.

Up to 50 demonstrators smashed windows, discharged fire extinguishers and threw debris from the roof of the building. But hundreds of others gathered in a forecourt below booed the culprit and shouted to others to stop damaging the building and throwing missiles.

The Met said ten of the 54 people arrested during sprawling outbreaks of disorder were under the age of 18.

It's disgusting behaviour, violence against people who have nothing to do with this, I wish they could have CS gassed the entire courtyard.
Unfortunatly you'll get people screaming some sort of human rights breach but, In my world violent hooligans don't get that luxury :(

I'm a student.
What a bunch of scum. There is never an excuse for violence.

Political views/ideology aside. For society to function not everyone can goto University. Furthermore third class honours in mickey mouse degrees are not going to get you a decent job or offer a return on the financial investment into studying. Yet the only way of supporting the level of people going to University is to increase fees. The alternative option is Universities stop 'padding out' with ridiculous courses to attract less able students and hit various statistical targets.

He wasn't attempting to murder anyone. And there is no such crime as 'attempted manslaughter'. It'd get laughed out of court.

The fact you believe throwing a fire extinguisher off the top of a building into a crowd of people is anything but that is idiotic.

I very much doubt he intended to kill anyone, so it isn't murder.

However, if they want they'll just nail him on some sort of assault charge and give him the maximum sentence for that, which could be just as bad.

Agreed

If I'd had anything to do with it they'd have sprayed the entire courtyard.... with bullets.

Proud to say that despite being a student I've not joined the NUS :).

Murder? Bwahahaha never never never in a million years.

Not even manslaughter as no-one died.

It's going to be something like 'reckless endangerment'. if he's currently clean, 24 months suspended sentence ..

If they can prove he threw it with the intention of hitting someone it is possible that they could make an attempted murder charge stick. Especially if he is a physics student! :)

In reality though he will probably get charged with a lesser offense, did the extinguisher injure anyone?
