Good morning guys,

Question for you which someone 'may' know a solution to. I was working over in Mexico for a short while and bought an iphone 4, the work was supposed to last longer than it did, but I assumed I had bought an unlocked handset anyway as there was talk over there that this could be done (and according to google is the case), however, it appears TelCel provide both kinds of handsets.

Anyhoo, when I got back I realised it was locked so I called TelCel to enquire about paying them for it to be 'unlocked' like I did with my 3GS on O2, but they were heavily confused (think it was a language barrier) so I then emailed them and they essentially said they don't have the ability and I quote, "need to speak to programmer" so, presumably Apple.

Do I have any option? Would it be worth heading into an Apple store and explaining this or would they just shrug it off and say tough luck? I don't really want to rely on jailbreaking and unlocking (and goodness knows when this maybe possible anyway as it's on baseband 02.10.04) ...

Any possible solutions ?

Hi mate, tried that and comes up no service and doesn't show the carrier tab in settings :/

think the only way you will do this is to jailbreak it and use a software unlock.

The only person who can hardware unlock your phone is the Network Operator, but just as in the U.S. they wont do this.

We're quite lucky that in the UK O2 etc.. are willing to do a hardware unlock.

Cheers chaps - yes, I thought that would be the case.

For reference, this was the exact reply from TelCel

Just JB the device and away you go.

Baseband 02.10.04 cannot yet be unlocked when jailbroken, apparently it should be possible once iOS 4.2 is released but didn't fancy having to do it like that, but if needs must I will.

Or find somewhere to sell it and buy another one.

My apple employee friend tells me all iPhone4's are network free until registered, and then locked to that carrier, so essiantially would be down to the carrier to unlock for you if that's correct.
