Hi all,

Does anyone on the board have a credit card that gives air miles for spending? I was just wondering if someone can recommend one to use.
 
Do you mean air miles as in the actual "air miles" scheme or do you want to earn redeemable miles with an airline?

I have cards which earn miles with both bmi and United. I mainly use the United one now as that's where I'm collecting my miles.

Something where i can earn mileage with an airline would be best. Is the
United one good? how many miles do you get per pound?

What it comes down to then is which airline you want to earn miles with! There's no point in earning miles with United if you're never going to fly with them or other Star Alliance carriers.

Get an idea of what sort of routes you want to fly and which airlines service them. Then choose your preferred airlines and compare their credit cards. You'll also need to compare their frequent flyer programmes. Eg. With bmi I can get a return 1st class flight to the US for 90,000 miles however with United it's quite a bit more. I mainly fly with United now as I hold a good frequent flyer status with them and even though redemptions cost more miles, the benefits such as free Econ+ seating, unlimited upgrades, lounge access etc. outweigh this.

Head over to www.flyertalk.com to get an idea of which programme would suit you best and from there, look at the credit cards available.
 
You need to get whatever one matches up with the airline you fly most.
BA - American express
BMI - Mastercard.

If you are not a frequent flyer, there is little value in this, you'd be better getting a card that gave cashback and using the cashback to buy the actual flight!
 
My parents both have a MasterCard and Amex linked to brussels airlines.
The amount of miles you get per €/£ depends on whether it's a normal, a silver or a gold.
(usually €1, €1.50, €2)

I was thinking about getting one, but seeing as my credit card bills are very rarely over a couple hundred a month, it's really not worth it for me.
As above, go with the one you fly most on, or the one which is a member of OneWorld, or Star Alliance, or Sky Team.

These are just credit cards not charge cards.

The only problem with Amex is that there are a lot of places that don't take Amex as payment. If you go to the States a lot then Amex is more widely accepted and so makes more sense.

I do know what a credit card is, thank you.
You need to be earning a certain amount per annum depending on which Amex card you apply for. For the BA cards you need an Annual Household Income of £30,000.
American Express cards don't have a credit limit.


Yes, there are quite a few places that don't take Amex due to their rather high rates, but it's worth it for the places that do accept it.
It's not as rare as you're making it out to be though.
Diners Club, now there's a stupid card to have :p

I have a card from my bank which allows you to choose the rewards you want. I choose Airmiles, valid with any pretty much most major airlines :)

You sure it isn't just a points system with a glorified travel agent? Are the miles transferrable to the major airlines frequent flyer programmes?

Amex credit cards do have a limit. Amex charge cards don't. Wasn't stating that Amex acceptance was rare just that there are lots of shops include supermarkets and restaurants etc that don't accept Amex. So it deoends where you do your spending as ton whether there's much value in having one.
