Yeah, I'm probably one of the few but personally I think a decent (and emphasis on decent, most aren't) resistive screen is far better than all capacitive screens. However hopefully Hitachi will be able to give the benefits of resistive screens to the gimped capacitive screens, specifically the ability to use something other than a bit of flesh to touch and accuracy (which is terrible on capacitive screens).

Hopefully this sort of screen will be making it's way into phones soon. :D

There are no benefits to a resitive screen, unless you have fingers somewhat akin to the deformed and crippled digits of a certain popular 80's supernatural child molester.

There are less downsides to a resistive.

I cannot use capacitive screen due to the fact that I am bigger than most people. I cannot use phones that have buttons anymore as my thumb hits all 9 buttons at once. The quest for miniturisation is a poor one. Touch screens are ideal, but unless you conform to the exact size they need you to, they are worse than buttons.

Yup, I tried out the samsung jet before I got my samsung spica, thinking it was a capacitive screen and good god, it was awful, had to push really hard in the screen or use my nail in order to actually select something and move down the contact list etc.

Never again shall I use any resistive device for as long as I live, unless they really do improve it a lot :p

EDIT:

It's already here! Check out this heavily camouflaged iPad 2 prototype :D:D

Lol :D

So true :p

I had the Nokia 5800 with a resistive screen for a while. It was terrible, really put me off touch screen mobiles.

Resistive screens are awful, I can honestly say there are no upsides to them really.

If you are 'bigger than most people' then you need a Galaxy Tab and a large coat pocket, not a resistive screen.

I never want to see them on good phones ever again.

Looks nice but can somone explain to me why Engadget.com always say "Video Demo after the break"? They are aware they are a website right?

They mean further down the page, as on the home page there is a break with the video/extra stuff after it.

Begone foul stylus!

As long as I can just use touchscreens with my own ability to touch, rather than prodding it with a stylus, I'm happy.

not at all true. I write data capture software for mobile phones and one the biggest things that our customers request is signature capture. We have been waiting for this to appear for a while!!

just the precision when needed. This screen is capactive yet has precision.. so.. win :D

The only disadvantages with resistive screen is that they require slightly more pressure than capacitive and do not (afaik) support multi touch. I prefer resistive screens because they are wayyyy more accurate

Resistive screens don't need a stylus. They are however far more accurate than capacitive screens. For example no more needing the curser to appear above the word you are trying to change becuase of an innacurate screen, just touch like you would normally on the place you want it and it works...

Resistive screens are FAR more accurate in most cases and a decent one hardly requires any more pressure than a capacitive screen.

Besides all that I do use my stylus very occasionally, normally when playing a game because I can get much more accuracy and my finger doesn't cover where I want to go/shoot. Most resistive screens don't support multitouch no, AFAIK but I think there are some out there that can.

Have you tried an N900 Amp? I think you'd like it. The resistive screen is the best I've used and its got a built in stylus that tucks away very neatly.

Specs are a bit dated but its certainly not bad.

Yup, the resistive is without a doubt much better for pin point accuracy, but just so horrible to use IMO.

When I tried out the samsung jet (was one of the carphone warehouse guys mobile, there wasn't any on display), I actually thought I was going to crack the screen with the amount of pressure that I was putting on the screen with both the finger nail and the whole finger just trying to select an icon and move across the menu or down or whatever it was :p

Think the guy could see the frustration on my face trying to use it :p

Was kind of like this here after using it for about 1 minute :p:

Resistive screens are also a lot easier to type Asian characters on which is quite a big market for some of the providers. This is a good jump in tech but I'd expect the second generation to be better with this sort of thing. I personally am against resistive as a whole but can understand why some phones are still made with them, they are just so cheap.

I have just switched from using an 'o2 XDA Exec' (resistive screen) with keyboard and stylus to an 'Orange San Francisco' Android phone with neither.

I think these new 'capacitive' screens are for cave men. Reminds me of the Jamie Oliver programme where American school kids don't get to eat with knives and forks until they are over 10. Capacitive screens are for these people who do not like to use tools.

Honestly how are you supposed to cut/copy/paste with your fingers. The precision of a stylus on a resistive screen is sadly missed.

If you have ever used a decent smartphone with keyboard and stylus on a resistive screen you would never want a capacitive screen again.

how big are you??? I'm not exactly a small bloke, 6'4 and until recently knocking on the door of 20 stone and have used iphone/desire for the last 2-3 years with no problems at all, and use a blackberry bold 9700 at work with only a few multi presses due to the buttons being so close, a problem i didnt have on the curve 8900 which was just as small but with a better keyboard design.

I have had a HTC magician and tytn2 before that with resistive touch screens and stylii, and can't say I miss them for almost all uses! multi touch and being able to work so quickly far outweighs the slight accuracy concerns (just zoom in a bit further if it's small)
