Why oh why oh why, have I seen a dramatic increase in the amount of people driving at night without their lights on?

Honestly no exaggeration in the last week alone I have seen 9 people driving at night without their lights on.

Just a pointless rant that I had to moan to the internet about.

Surely you notice how dark everything is, not only in the car but the road ahead?

Not quite the same, but lately I've seen tons of people driving with one headlight bulb out. It's a shame we don't have rules like over on the continent where it's a legal requirement to carry spare bulbs.

I've seen a few driving on unlit roads with only sidelights on. Amazing really, I had a go at it and could not see where I was going at all. Surely this has got to come under careless/dangerous driving :/

Don't get me started.

And the idiots who think sidelights are ok in these conditions. WHY NOT JUST TURN ON YOUR DIPPED LIGHTS!?

They forget to turn them, they’re saving the planet, saving bulbs. They are just plain dim. Don’t get me angry. Grrrrrrrrrr.

Because people are morons.

I followed a line of traffic down and NSL road yesterday evening, when i finally got my way to the front a woman in a Focus was doing 25 - 30mph with the interior light on and full beams on, lots of people coming the other way flashing and beeping, she didn't get the message till i overtook and sat infront of her at 20mph with my foglight on.

Roadrage ++

I was told that it is actually LEGAL to drive in an area that is lit by permanent street lighting (and this is the bit I am unsure on) either with no lights on or just sidelights just cant remember which it was now.

I think it is because the nights pull in so quickly now. People set off and as the light fades they simply forget to turn their lights on until it is completely dark and they think "errr... can't see where I'm going... oh yeah, headlights"

Depends on the nature of the fog and the road as to whether the headlights and foglights work OK together. There's no hard and fast rule.

Im fairly sure the is a hard and fast rule and it tells you what visibility in which to use fog lights, fog lights with no fog = driving offence and bloody annoying no matter how "ace" it looks on a barried up 206 or new mini :(

*edit*

Just checked it, fog lights on with >100m visibility = illegal

I'll be quoting this in future :D
I gave my Dad a right earful the other night for using them. He likes to call them 'driving lights' (that'd be dipped beam then). He's stopped now anyway :)
On an unlit road it's almost as bad as full beam in your face.

To be fair it's not like people with full beams on.

Full Beams = Blinding other road users
Fog Lights = Not actually doing any harm

It's not an excuse, but I'd much rather that all the blinding Full Beams & HIDs in Reflectors crew were done before people with their Fog Lights on.

It is quite common here in Scotland, doesn't matter it is raining heavy or is dark - people don't use their lights on - I don't know it is laziness or ignorance.

It doesn't help that some cars light up the instrument cluster with the ignition on although I still find it amazing that drivers don't notice the headlights aren't on.

This on new fords, after driving out of a forecourt i was caught out! :o

I have noticed an increasing amount of people driving with the interior light on, just baffles me how people are so moronic - worst part is they can vote in general elections!

If the roads wet the light is doing exactly what a fog light should do and aim at the ground and then bounce up, this can be dazzling to other drivers. My front fogs are tiny little lights that couldn't dazzle a mole and other cars like the 406 are mini flood lights.

What I mean is, if is, at various levels of fogginess and depending on the road you might need the fog lights to illuminate better the ground and side of the road, as well as your normal dipped beam. Other times, you might need your fog lights but the dipped beam is just reflecting straight back off the fog and making visibility worse.

It goes without saying that you don't use foglights when it's not actually foggy though...

In answer to the Op. Maybe it's due to the increased number of cars which have their dash lights on all the time, and they have bought the non exec. spec car without the auto lights function.Either that or they are just not very bright themselves ;)
