HTC Desire HD (Ace)

First impressions are...... excellent.

It feels a very well built phone, the SIM Cover went back on fine and fits flush to the phone chassis. The battery cover doesn't quite, it sticks out a bit sort of like where the LED flash is, but its just the design of the phone and it doesn't really matter.

The phone is smooth as butter, and the screen (which I was a bit worried about) actually seems very good, the size of it is excellent and it doesn't look 'bad' next to AMOLED, just a tiny little bit washed out, but its pretty much not an issue.

I'll take a photo later next to the Desire and Omnia 7 later so you can see LED, SAMOLED and LCD :)

Obviously I'll need to condition the battery a bit before it will be good and set the phone up properly but I'm more impressed with it than I thought I was going to be, it feels good to be back on Android :p

Edit: Oh, and I didn't know I'd get an 8GB SD Card with it

If you've been waiting since release for this, you've been had.

Interestingly, people who have been waiting since release, have you got a really dirt cheap upgrade deal or something?

They might put you at the bottom of the pile as you wont go elsewhere if you are getting a really good deal.

Well, it was probably a week after release.

Mine is an upgrade, and being a business contract, i wouldnt call the line rental cheap, and i would expect any phone free, so nothing unusual there.

From what i found out today at my local T-Mobile store, they are expecting stock next week.

Calling T-Mobile, they gave me one of the usual "We hope to be getting stock before the end of the week"

I am not sure if i can get my upgrade via CPW or a company similar without affecting my business contract, anybody know if this is possible? Then again i wouldnt be suprised if hardly anywhere has stock anymore :(

where are people buying the usb cables/chargers from, and what price?
my last phone had a different mini-usb connection so i need to buy about 3 more so im covered at all my 'bases'...

After spending 5 days with my desire HD I think I am going to be returning it. I am just not happy with the speaker loudness and battery life.

Such a shame as everything else about it is great. I have switched everything off including GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi and no apps are syncing. I refuse to turn off internet as how else will HTC sense work when needed!?

I am not a heavy user. Yesterday, off the charger at 8:30am send a couple of texts get into work find 5% of battery capacity has vanished.. nuts. Make a few 10minute calls, play some angry birds for 10minutes. Later in the day, send 7 texts browse the net for 30minutes. Make another couple of calls.. play angry birds for 20minutes a text or two and then 7pm battery shut down! Even looking at this phone from afar hurts the battery!

This is not heavy usage and I am on my 5th day now and I can't see the battery life getting any better.

Just can't see myself being happy with baby sitting the battery and missing calls for 18 months.

Someone actually commented on XDA forums stating that the desire HD has a better battery life than the magic. Must be joking! What adds insult and doesn't look good for 3rd party batteries is the fact that the way the battery hatch is designed makes it near impossible for larger and significantly high capacity batteries to be used - Something which this lovely yet very power hungry display needs.

All of the people/sites out there which say the desire HD hasn't got battery life issues are kidding themselves. Unless you switch off the internet completely off for a big portion of the day you will not see the device last you a full day. All these wonderful syncing options rendered useless by the small capacity battery.. is such a mistake on HTCs part.

HTC are plonkers fitting a poor speaker and low capacity battery into a flagship handset, idiots!

It takes around 7-10 days for the battery to condition properly, make sure you are doing proper charge cycles and it should improve. People with moderate usage are getting 2 days out of it, at the worst they are getting one day comfortably. It seems people with battery problems are a vocal minority, which could indicate some of the batteries on earlier handsets might be a bit dodgy.

As soon as it started raining outside earlier on... the phone started to have rain drops appear and dribble down the screen and then a windscreen wiper came and wiped it all off :D:D This feature really make me chucke lol!

Just finally sorted out my Google account as well as I changed my google mail to gmail.com and it messed my account up so I had to re-do the account on the phone.

Been using the phone quite a bit today, bit of texting, calling, downloading updates & installing apps, bit of the camera etc. with the wifi on & screen brightness at 60% the whole time and I'm currently down to 30% battery.

What about charging it at work?

Have you had a look seeing what is using the battery? I'm finding it to be only slightly worse than the Magic on battery usage, but not by any meaningful amount.

Trouble is that 7 to 10 day time means bye bye to cooling off period. ;)

Are people really getting a full day comfortably out of it with the internet left on?

Over 50% of my usage goes on powering the screen. Have experimented with manual brightness which helps but not by much.

Perhaps I do have a poor performing battery as it is impossible to through a day with internet left on. Usb debugging is also on must add.

Well, I have read through the entire XDA thread, and there are probably less than 5 people who have a problem with the battery in the end, quite a few do at the start and it improves for nearly all of them with a bit of tinkering and battery conditioning.

Paul O'Brien (the owner of Modaco) thought it was awful at first and now calls it 'excellent' after 10 days, along with plenty of other people.

I'm getting a good 2 1/2 days out of mine now with wifi running most of the day - had mine since 22nd October.

Battery has defino got better with time.

For an advanced smartphone, this is basically the best you are going to get full stop.

2ish days is more than fine for a phone like the HD!

Mine will have 30-40 % left at about 11.30 PM in from been taken off charge at 7.30 AM.

Id say its actually decent. Im really loving Sense. I had a nexus one with Stock 2.2 and i think Sense actually adds to the experince and doesnt hinder it (unlike touchwiz and motoblur)

One thing that i REALLY hate is this bit of Sense.

I know i could use launcher pro or whatever but is there a way of keeping the Sense widgets but having the bottom bit like stock 2.2?

I know there are diffrent themes on HTC hub but for some reason when you change them you can longer tell what box's are marked on tick boxes!

Here is a picture of some of the diffrent bottom launchers with the themes. When you pick them does anybodys else check boxes not work correctly?

Are there any 'must do' battery conditioning tricks or is it simply a case of doing full charge cycles for the first few weeks of use?

Never had an android phone before so not really sure where one needs to start re: setting it up. Is there a decent guide to system setup/optimization etc. anywhere?
