Just some random PH and AT browsing at work has thrown up a few cars, noticed one in Ireland that is fairly cheap. I understand that exporting cars to Ireland tends to be quite costly, its on a normal UK plate at the moment, not an Irish one.

For future reference, would it just be a case of viewing the car and driving it back on the ferry if it all checked out OK?

I know Ireland and NI has a bit of a dodgy reputation for all cars being thrashed though :o

You'll have to pay VAT or some sort of import tax for a start. I think you'll probably find that unless the car is rare - it's not going to be worth doing.

If it's on UK plates then I don't think you have to pay anything.
You shouldn't have to pay VAT or import tax as it's all EU.

I think I'm confusing it with registering and potentially having to do an IVA or SVA. It's not straightforward I know that much - I'm looking into potentially doing the opposite although it's easier for me as I already own the car.

Sounds dodgy tbh, shouldn't be on a UK plate for a start and a low price would set alarm bells ringing too, cars are much more expensive in Ireland than over here.

You don't know how easy you have it compared to us paddys

The irish vehicle registration tax is shameful protectionism, artificially props up the industry and rakes in loads for the government in taxes. Tragically it can't just be abolished as it would instantly devalue existing owners cars by thousands.

A half decent 2003 E46 M3 in the UK is what £11k? Try circa €17k here. Ok so surely you could pull one in from the UK and save a few quid....?? Course not - that'll be €6,000 'registration' tax mate
