can cheques "expire"?

6 months, so the cheque will no longer be valid, just call the company and get them to issue another cheque, depending on the amount.

I found a cheque from BT that was issued to me after our house move almost 12 months ago. Now I can't cash it? Noes. :( It was for 78p, I think I'll ring up and ask for another one! :D

Just get it pass the cashier you will be fine. If you pay in a lot of cheques, slip it in the middle. :)

There are no exacting rules you should be ok.

I have a cheque somewhere for something like 0.04p I never cashed it as I thought it was ridiculous it was ever sent to me, must have cost around £1 to send it, so I kept it, it's in a drawer somewhere, can I really force them to re-issue it? It was from a dispute with Welsh Water years ago, if I can force them to re-issue I'll do it just so it costs them to administrate it all :D

Personally, I'd frame it. Then whenever you have guests over, you can all have a good laugh at it.

Limit always used to be 6 months, and I don't think it's changed.

If I were you I'd must stick it in Credit Point and see what happens :). If worst comes to worst you could always get the sender to give you a new one.

There is no limit as such in that if the cashier accepts it it will clear. I have this happen a lot in the accounts I manage and it's a bit inconvenient as we we write off the cheques after 6 months and attempt a re-issue. If they are a high enough value we may stop them but as they are usually about £100 there's no point in paying the £25 charge.

Legally speaking there's not necessarily an expiry date to cheques as SpeedFreak says, however practically speaking (which is more useful here) many banks will refuse them after 6 months and demand you get one re-issued but that is just a convention and not an absolute rule.

I cashed a cheque last month from the Mother in law. The bank said i only had 4 days left with it and it expired. He said they cant accept it if it over 6 calendar months and i just presumed that was 'the law'.
