My contract is due to end in the next week and I've narrowed it down to these two phones. I've read many reviews on both of them and spent a good half an hour playing with them in the o2 shop today but still can't decide which one to get.

I've heard that the SGS screen is supposed to be the better screen but when comparing them, I couldn't really notice the difference. What's the battery like on both phones?

Which one would you choose?

similar battery

i dont think i would get either. i would wait for the next wave of android phones . surely due sometime soon ?

February onwards at the earliest to be honest.

The SGS has a slightly better battery than the Desire HD, however the Desire HD is the better phone all round.

The SGS's main good point is its screen, which isn't good enough to beat all the DHD's strong points.

If you use your phone a lot you are going to have to charge it every day regardless, if not then you can get 2 days out of both of them comfortably (the batteries improve over a few charge cycles so dont be disheartened if it seems an absolute joke at first)

Get the DHD (or wait, its up to you) :)

Is the nexus 2/S not due out before xmas or before January?

Which will be better than any android mobile on the market at the minute.

IMO, the galaxy S has a much superior screen to the HD and better battery life and also the sweet spot 4" screen size for me, desire HD is too big for my likings but still would consider it anyway.

But apart from those 2 reasons the desire HD is better overall.

Personally I would just wait till January anyway especially for the nexus 2/S, which will have gingerbread straight away and you won't have to wait for like 4-6 months before the other mobiles get the update officially.

Either way it's up to you.

It could be January, but by the time stock and such is allocated it would be Feb anyway.

Most of the talk I've heard would be February for the new Samsung phones.

I doubt there will be any more big phone releases this year.

I've actually got a SAMOLED next to my Desire HD right now and while the contrast/blacks are far better, its not something on the whole that would influence my decision.

The problem I found with Android phones (and tech in general) is that not matter when you decide to buy there's always a next best thing 2-3 months away!

I've gone for the Desire HD, should arrive tomorrow :)

The battery life is far better on the Galaxy S it has a 25% higher capacity then the DHD's for one.

25% doesn't really help though...you don't want to have to recharge your phone 25% of the way through day 2. My dhd battery is also getting better by the day, whether it's from stopping useless synching or actual battery improvements, I don't know. Fact remains, a battery needs to be much better than 25% better in a phone, to make any difference (imo).

SGS. Desire HD is massive and the battery sucks.

Size isn't really an issue, if you can use the SGS, you can just as easily use the Desire HD, its not much bigger at all.

The battery isn't far off the SGS battery at all either, there is more to it than capacity and so on. Its bad to begin with (like many phones) and improves to a fairly solid battery.

Suppose, still think it is the mobile to wait for :p

Yeah I am sure that the desire HD still has a great screen, but after trying out the galaxy S and the desire with AMOLED, I just couldn't get over how good the SAMOLED screen was, really was jaw dropping IMO :p

But the main reason for me waiting is because the mobile will be the official google mobile so you will get the updates straight away and you know that you will get more than just 1 or 2 updates.

Yup true, I am not too bothered about hardware in terms of CPU, RAM etc. (as long as it is decent though) as pretty much all android mobiles going from lowish-mid end can do any tasks just as well as the higher/top end ones albeit maybe just a bit slower though.

For me it is the android updates that **** me off, pretty much apart from the google mobile, all other android mobiles will only get a max of 2 updates and the majority only get 1 and then dumped pretty much straight away.

So that's is pretty much why I rather get the official google mobile instead of all the other android phones.

Sony Ericssons flagship X12 comes out in February, it packs a whopping 800mhz CPU and runs android 2.1

Oh wait... :o:p

A nice resistive screen just to top it off? :p

Lol :p

Isn't the SAMOLED screen much better than the SLCD for the battery life as well although isn't it when the OLED screens show really bright colours, they actually use more battery life than the SLCD iirc.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S and have gone and lost it. I am very sad as I don't think my mobiles.co.uk insurance will cover loss.

Off topic but if anyone has experience with them it would be nice to hear.

I have manned up and bagged some overtime anyway and am considering a Desire HD but with no front facing camera and small battery I am not so sure.

Has anyone seen the new LG phone due Feb? Tegra graphics, dual core, massive battery and front cam. :D

There are going to be better new phones early-ish next year.

If you want one now, the Desire HD battery should perform fairly similarly to the SGS battery so I wouldn't let that worry you too much.

Do you even use the front cam?

Tell Mobiles.co.uk it was stolen... maybe... ;)

I struggled to get a day from mine, most of the time the phone was pretty much dead by 4/5PM. Id say that was under medium use as well. :(
