Cards like GTX 480 performed well on release, but ended up costing NVidia millions. There have been many similar or worse fails for both NVida & ATI (7x00's 2900's etc).

What do you think been the most successful Ethusiast Graphics Card in terms of performance, consumer value and actual profit for the manufacturer? Here are a few suggestions.
*Geforce TI4x00 series (ahh Unreal Tournement at 1024x768 at 30+ fps).
*Radeon 9800 Pro (Doom3 becomes playable and some games can even handle AA)
*Geforce 8800GT (not quite as fast as the 8800GTX but cheaper and still monsterously fast)
*Radeon 4850 (little brother to the awesome 4870)
*Radeon 5850 (Massive performance for £200 when first released. So good that you could even play Crysis and ATI put the price up by 20%).

The original GeForce - with models like the Diamond Viper V550 - it broke the mold and introduced performance cards for the mainstream - the voodoo's were too rare/expensive.

I still have my ChainTech GeForce2 Ultra in the attic in its box - it cost me £179 IIRC - but Viper was the one I had before it.
