New Qualcomm CPU

By the time Qualcomm's 1.5GHz QSD8672 Snapdragon finally makes it to market, it might be obsolete -- the company just announced that the new 28nm dual-core MSM8960 system-on-a-chip will have five times the performance and consume 75 percent less power than the original Snapdragon when it arrives in 2011. It's got the usual WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and FM radio modules but also a multi-mode LTE / 3G modem too, and reportedly four times the graphical muscle on board. Speaking of graphics, Qualcomm seperately took the time to detail a new GPU: the Qualcomm Adreno 300 series, which will allegedly offer the gaming performance of an Xbox 360 or PS3. We'd say "We'll believe it when we see it," but that would imply doubt -- the reality is that we just want to feast our eyes on mobile gaming bliss as soon as humanly possible.

Sounds good :)

That is a huge claim! The same gaming performance as a 360/PS3 in running 'hello world' or pong? Good news nonetheless.

28nm ?! They've certainly come on in leaps and bounds - I guess just following the same downscaling that computer chips have gone through!

/throws crummy 45nm QSD8255 in the bin :p

The gap between mobile CPUs and desktop one is closing in quickly (though desktop will always be in the lead). Only the other day they managed to overclock a Desire Z to 1.9Ghz

It's the same core as the desire z, so yes. It was rated at 1.5gigzz by Qualcomm at one point..

ARM/partners has Intel looming in the background, they need to keep pushing. Good news for us :)

Doesnt the 360/ps3 have relatively old gfx parts? (i.e. NVIDIA 7xxx, ATI 800) + these chips are really designed for tablets not small phones with tiny batteries. (wouldn't mind if someone was mad enough to make one though :))

Yeah the 360 is based on a X1900 (DX9) with some DX10 features (unified shaders I believe)*. And the PS3/RSX is based on a 7900 - both very capable for current generation consoles.

* I may be wrong on this - but think it is something along those lines.

Still to claim they are on par with current gen consoles, they must have some aspect of their performance that is comparable to the 360/PS3. Not sure what that might be though.

Granted there's no way it could push the kind of pixels a 360 or PS3 is able to but it must match it in some way, although why you'd need that level of power in a phone/tablet I don't really know!

Would be pretty toasty after a bit of gaming - my iPod touch (newest gen) gets toasty after just 10/15 minutes of gaming depending on the games.

Be interesting to see if they can keep the slim form factor of some of todays phones as doubtless the cooling will need to be adjusted!

Well the 360 and PS3 push 720p. Tablets coming out in 2011 supposedly have that resolution.

The xbox 360 came out 5 years ago and so to stands to reason that we can call the 360 gpu 5 years old.

The 360 gpu was the predecessor to the hd 2xxx generation of cards. Runs at 500mhz and has 48 shaders with 2 ops per cycle. Thats 48 billion shader ops per second.

A HD5450 has more shaders running at a faster clockspeed. 80 shaders at 650mhz with 2 ops per cycle. 104 billion shader ops per second.

Of course, from the ati/nvidia competition we know the ops per second statistic doesn't mean much. It's all about what they do exactly

I think the bigger problem would be power draw, even if they could match the power. While consoles obviously do 1080/720 are many games still using the resolution cheat with an upscale? I guess they could be hinting at this (or as indeed above, shader ops/sec)

I've never thought of my HD2 being slow.....

What would be more use is if they got a CPU to use half the power so the it would last longer between charges :)

Unfortunately it will still suck on a little screen whichever way you look at it :(

Forget the screen, DLNA/HDMI straight to any 1080p TV! :) Has the HTC Media Link been released yet? That's something you could try on your DHD Robbo! (unless your TVs already DLNA ready :p)

I'm just interested to see what Samsungs Orion can do (Duel core 1Ghz A9 + quad core Mali gpu) Then we can start thinking about the 360 busting Adrino 300s and the rest in 2012/2013. :D (and the one game which can use the power... angry birds 3D! ;))
