What was the most "successful" Enthusiast Card ever?

For me it's close between the early voodoo cards and the 9800 pro. The 8800 GTX was a bit of a beast though at the time and what I stepped up to from my 9800.
The voodoo's were probably most successful because there wasn't a great deal of competition at the time. Maybe a few matrox cards etc?

The 9800 was the first card I had that really blew me away and at the time was unbeatable. It's also the first card I put under water and did some good overclocking on.

Anyone remember the pencil voltage mods? :p

Still I can't choose between the two though!

8800GTX
no matter what people says about 8800GT, it's still GTX's little brother, and even the full fat 8800GTS 512MB cannot beat 8800GTX at high resolutions.

then there's 9800Pro.
and there's also Geforce 4 Ti cards, massive improvements.

For me its gotta be the 9800 pro as this was the card that took me from a console gamer to being a pc gamer. I agree with the people saying it was the 9700 pro though not the 9800 that was the first beast in this series which was a game changer.

I suppose the Voodoo 1 should be given a special mention purely for the very satisfying "click" you would get just before your eyes were treated to a visual 3D feast :D

Most 'successful' I would have to say the 8800GTX.

There was a point where almost every person on here had one (or one if its ilk GTS/GT).

The 8 series seemed to go on forever (with ATI messing up their response for so long). Not to mention the 8800GTX being so over powered for its time. It tore through everything for a long time after it came out.

The only other card that comes close would be the 9800Pro.

While the Voodoo made a huge impact on gaming, it wasn't the most 'successful'.

gotta be the TNT2 for me. budget gaming for the masses. *reminisces* <-- spelling
anyone play day of the tentacle? that game was pro, free maniac mansion too! cant think what else i used to play on it, maybe original UT? Quake?

*dissapears to check loft for old school fragtastic action*

Voodoo2 12MB SLi for me, Playing Motorhead on my Thrustmaster wheel, silky smooth gaming heaven for it's time. They should remake that game, I sold a bunch of expensive systems in the off the back of showing it to people

Also worth a mention - Matrox Mystique.

I still have a pair of 12meg and a pair of 8meg voodoo 2's stashed away in my junk cupboard - may have to dig them out for a pointless picture post

3Dfx voodoo was a hugely successful 3D addon card. But it was just that, an addon and wasn’t a complete solution. The 3Dfx voodoo 2 was just more of the same. Very successful mind, and kicked started the whole GPU market if you ask me. Power VR by NEC /Videologic tried but ultimately failed as 3Dfx was well beyond anything else at the time.

I think the 9700 pro was, or has to be the most successful 2D/3D card ever released. It instantly made all games playable at resolutions up to 1024 x 768 or even 1280 x 1024 if you sacrificed texture levels and AA. Very good and actually affordable video card, I enjoyed owning one and was sad to say goodbye to it…. Was a very capable DX9 card.

Playing Doom 3 on a 9700 pro whilst it was a killer the 9700 pro wasn’t no slouch and the game was perfectly playable with a high level of detail. I fondly remember Half Life 2 on the trusty old 9700 pro. My 8800GTX just didn’t seem to make that jump like the 9700 pro did.

I remember waiting nearly a month for my 9700 pro as the version I wanted was the blue PCB board and they were in very short supply at the time. The only other video card that I’ve purchased since the 9700 pro that has pushed my gaming rig to new levels is the 5870…

Bench them, its amazing how well they stand up in modern games.

Most 'successful' I would have to say the 8800GTX.

Depends on definition of successful. I missed out the 8800gtx due to high costs and only upgraded my x800xt when there were too many games which wouldn't work due to lack of correct shader support, not due to lack of speed.

I wish I could find how many people bought 8800gtx versus voodoo. With voodoo it did really seem everybody had one and 3dfx were making money so fast they didn't know what to do with it all.

geforce 256 now that was groundbreaking . i got one for £168 from software wharehouse . 1st hardware t&l . ive got to say when i put my orchid 4meg in it astounded me . i also remember for me the power vr was more problematic but ultimate race looked stunning going through the woods

edit: ive still got my voodoo 2 12meg and my matrox mystique hanging around
cheers

i can remember seeing a pc running sli voodoo 2's ( mortal combat i think ) and thinking it cant get much better than this . how wrong i was but they were exciting times
