On a MK4 Golf platform car (MK1 A3, MK1 Leon, MK1 Octavia, etc etc) Is this a dealer only job, or is it something I can do myself with the help of VAG-COM?

When I got my LCR I only got one key, which over the years has become pretty battered (and is only the 2-button type). I've recently acquired a 3-button fob and blank blade (which is compatible with the car, this is confirmed).

I'm assuming that they car already has two keys programmed into it (what would have been my spare should I have ever actually got it, plus the main key), and from what I can work out, the convenience module can only hold information for two keys? So I need to clear the data and start again?

Can I do this myself?

Any help appreciated.

You can code the key for central locking easily enough but you can't code the immobiliser if I remember correctly. I think that's a dealer job as you need the Immobiliser codes etc.

You can do it with VAGCOM but you need the cars SKC which the dealer is unlikely to give you now as VAS (the dealers kit) no longer displays it when coding the car.

You can however use Vag Commander to pull the SKC from the immobiliser and then use VAGCOM or Vag Commander to code the key. It will certainly let you code at least 3 keys on a MK1 TT so I assume a MK4 platform car will take 3. I haven't coded a key with VAGCOM but my understanding is you need to code all the keys fresh with Vag Commander you can just add an extra key.

That should only code in the central locking not the immobiliser, apparently it can only be done by the dealers or, as said, via a vagcom if you know the sku.

I'm in the same boat since I've only got the one key for the immobiliser and I haven't got round to see how much the price will be from the dealer :(
