Replacement fan for Hd 5850?

Hi guys, I have 2 original HD 5850's in crossfire. I believe the fan on one of them is failing as on start up it 'grinds' like its catching on something.
If I give it a tap or two it normally stops and gives me no more trouble until I start it up the following day.

So, I was wondering if I could get a replacement fan for it?

I have looked at after-market coolers, but as I am running crossfire it seems the only option would be a Scythe SCVMS-1000 Musashi cooler.
Even then I'm not that sure it would fit correctly, has anyone got any experience with one of these? Could I retain the original cooling 'plate'?

Thanks.

Yeh, the problem is that I want to run a xfire setup and most of the aftermarket coolers are 3 slot.
I think I'll cut my losses, install a Zalman VF3000a then sell the card.
In fact I might sell both and buy 2 6870's, I hear they are good in xfire.

Personally I wouldn't, its not worth the upgrade imo, I would wait and see what ATI or the GTX 570 offers.

not wanting to sound daft but do you have other cards that are blocking the way? if only one of the two has a faulty fan get a 3rd party cooler and have that card as the lower of the two? Shouldn't then pose a problem...

Like he said :D

Get an aftermarket cooler and if it is a 3 slot one the put the aftermarket cooled 5850 at the bottom and the other one at the top.

Yeh, the thought did cross my mind.
It would mean removing my sound card, I could live without it tbh.
But there would only be about 1cm of clearance between the cooler and the fan of my PSU, could be a problem?

If only the fan has stopped/grinds, use the naff cooler in the bottom slot, unplug the original fan (to stop it moving), and strap bigger fan to the side of the card with cable ties. (Until you make your decision, or permanently lol).

Blimey! That thing is HUGE!!
Don't think I'll have room for it, but thanks for the suggestion.
I think it will have to be the Musashi with the original heatsink in place.

Manochutney, if you enable your trust i might be able to send you a spare 5850 fan, if you are confident enough to replace the faulty one?

I'm useing the vf3000 atm with a single 5850 with plans for watercooling it so i will not need the vanilla cooling in the future (il sell it with the vf3000 in the future if need be)

If not, then you can use the Zalman VF-1000/2000 with the stock vrm/ram plate that comes with vanilla 5850 cards, would still be two slot aswell as low profile but much much cooler with adequate airflow.

This is my 5850 with a vf-3000+stock plate fitting with no problems. The black plate is the ram/vrm alluminum plate, you can do the same as this with the vf-1000 and i belive the vf2000

Hope that helps :)

Yes, that helps a great deal!
I would prefer to keep the card original, I've no plans to o/c (too much!) as in xfire they are performing so well. I have just sent an email to Sapphire in the hope they could provide me with a replacement.
Do you think the VF-1000 would be up to the job?

Oh, and I have enabled trust now. I think.

A vf-1000 would be fine with stock settings (even an o/c I'd say), and your antec 900 would be fine for airflow if all the fans are fitted. It has more copper than the vf-3000 and would keep a 5850 really really cool, woudnt know about noise though, but a vf-3000 on a fan controller at lowest setting(still not going above 45 degrees in games) is truely silent.

If you cant get a response fom sapphire and dont go down the vf-1000/2000 route send a message to my trust and il see if i can get the spare fan to you :).

I used vf-1000's on a pair of crossfired 4870's with the fans turned down to about 30% for accoustic reasons and they kept those cards cool so I suspect one would be fine on your card.

I just wish zalman would use pwm fans that you can connect directly to the graphics card rather than insisting on using standard 3pin fans with a manual fan controller - thats a pet gripe of mine!

When I say accoustic reasons don't think that the zalman fans are loud because they aren't - I just didn't want to hear them at all!

Just a bit of an update to really say a BIG thanks to Nico Joey for your help with the fan. :D
I've swapped fans and the card is running just great, whisper quiet again!
Also had a good clean out and applied better TIM, it runs cooler as well, result!!!
