Hi guys, my old Saab is still dead but the garage that last worked on it have admitted fault and say they will repair it if I can get the car to them, trouble is they are about 50 miles away.

I have a friend who has an A frame but currently no vehicle with a tow bar. I also could borrow a braked trailer. But I never realised it would be so hard, the Saab weight it just under 1700 Kgs and I'm told the trailer is about 700 Kgs, not many vehicles can tow this much weight even braked.

Any suggestions on how I could get the car there with out it costing loads?

Thanks

I'm a member of the RAC, will they do it too? I should add half the engine has been stripped so making out it has just broke down is not an option.

If you have access to a trailer then your only option is to find someone with a sizable car with a towbar.

Well, other option is to phone around local breakers yards/recovery firms for a quote to move it.

In that case they wont.

That's what I thought, the RAC towed it here a couple of months ago.

I know a guy with a Dodge Ram but I wouldn't feel comfortable asking him as I don't know him that well and the fuel costs would be big.

My girlfriends dad has a Freelander but it turns out they can only just about tow a wet fart.

Jez - Trouble is the weight with the trailer it needs to be something pretty big to be capable and legal. That's if I have understood the towing specs correctly.

I'd risk it personally...unlikely to get stopped.

Yea me too, he who dares and all that, just make sure the trailer lights are working with a decent number plate on it, not a home made bit of tat.

+1

Something decent looking and with the trailer 100% no-one should bat an eyelid. If it were towed by a normal saloon however that'd get a coppers attention and more likely to get stopped.

There are companies out there that will move cars on a proper flat-bed lorry for you.. Typically, they are the independents that are contracted out to the likes of RAC etc. Take a look through your yellow pages for "Car Transporters" or something similar.

cheeky buy a different local garage might have a recovery truck they use?

Not gonna say no to a cash job are they :)

The art of moving broken/old/project/ebay cars is a pain!

My fave is getting the AA to to give me a free ride all the way from Brighton to Bedford in a car I'd just bought knowing it was a non runner using my brothers AA membership card :) Happy days :)

I used a company called CPR to get my Mondeo from Southampton to Manchester at a total cost of £120.

Go on shiply, post up the job and wait a few days - the price will come crashing down :)

Thanks guys, I tried Shiply, only had one quote so far at £85. We tried a local guy and he said £60 so will probably go with him.

Shiply makes the quotes public so the people bidding can see whats been bid. That'll come way down quickly enougn

My first quote was £250 from the same people I eventually ended up going with at £120!
