Nvidia 580+460 Physx

ive just bought myself a Nvidia 580 and im just wondering would it be better to have my old 460 as a dedicated Physx card if this is possible or is the 580 ok on its own for Physx and i wont lose any fps in games.

the best answer would be to benchmark, your system with and without the 460 and see what results you get, personally i wouldnt use a 460 as a physx since it is still powerfull, but to save on money i would just use it, unless you know you can get a good Value at the MM (Which you would be able to access now), and then get your self maybe a cheap card just for PhysX....

Give it a go and see how it feels. Personally I think the 580 on it's own is powerful enough

No, you will get a lower FPS if you use a 460 for PhysX (I think)

I saw some bechmarks tests, GTX 480 + 8800GTX (PhysX dedicated). The 480 performed better by itself.

the 460 is good for physx, though as mentioned already any physx game out at present really would be fine without a dedicated 460 for the physx; unless the resolution is 2560.

imo, it's not worth it at present if gaming at 1080p.

normally you do if you just joined up but if you been around for about a year or more you can just have 100 post and still access it, if am incorrect please correct me..............i was trying to find the rules of MM

You usually get smoother performance using a dedicated card for physics compared to using the same card for rendering and physics.

not sure what the cut off point is (likely around GT 240), but what I am sure is a 460 as dedicated physx will improve performance in games such as mafia 2. best to do is test it, it should be around 5-10 fps more.

You're wrong about Members Market access, you need 250 posts and be signed up for at least 3 months. It's all in FAQ - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/faq.php

To the OP, you'll most likely find PhysX pointless. Play through a few games using it, such as Batman: AA, Mafia 2 or anything else that is out there and makes a use of PhysX (Cryostasis, Mirror's Edge, Sacred 2, the list of "interesting" games ends here), see for yourself if it's worth it.

After that decide whether you want to keep your GTX460 as a backup card or get some money back from selling it over.

Off topic but, I've got a HD4890 and want to start playing Mafia 2, would it be worth getting a 8800 and run both cards? would there be any issues?

You'd need modified drivers, nVidia don't "allow" PhysX to run on the GPU if the main rendering device isn't detected as an nVidia card also :S

I think you use to be able to have a ATI + Nvidia card together but i remember reading on these forums that Nvidia did something to there drivers to block this from happening.
There maybe a software out there to get around this but im not sure.

and in the process they have single handedly killed any likelihood of Physx being adopted by the majority of game developers

A 580 will be more than powerful enough and with the 460 as a dedicated physx card you may get a drop in fps. SSD with the proceeds is the best idea.
