hi there, my gpu is running really hot at 105 degrees running l4d2,

ive been told these cards do run hot but surely this is wrong.....

ive taken off the heatsink and cleaned it all out, put some artic silver on the gpu and it makes no difference at all.....

i also start to lag in game when it gets this hot, even though my ping doesnt change......

im going to put another fan in the case to blow air over the card......

i also think the way its going , it will not last long either the way things are...

Check the fan is still working! (and plugged in on the card).

Have you recently installed anything that would account for a fan speed change (like MSI Afterburner etc?)

Check your case fans are all working, and check that if you have filters on your case they are clean.

Computer isn't next to a radiator is it?

Have you tried manually setting the fan to a much higher speed? Personally i think the gpu is on its last legs as with a few of my gpu's in the past much higher temps then went on to be a total failure.

thanks for the reply,

ive installed afterburner , but the fan is set to auto and does adjust with temp change,

all fans are working ok.....and clean , as ive just had a new case...corsair 600t

this is the first time ive monitored temps on this card.....due to l4d2 playing up and dropping frames, sometimes down to 35ish, and me missus gtx460 runs ok

ill install another fan to blow air over the card and see if things improve.....

ive read lots of stories all over the net about hot gtx280s.......

First off I'd double check you have installed the heatsink correctly after putting it back on, my GTX 280 never goes above 85 degrees under normal use and mine is overclocked rather nicely too!

105c is the temp of a known fault on Gtx280 no matter what cooling. I always thought the faulty cards had the problem from the beginning rather than the fault developing and people returned them.

I believe 105c is the throttling temp which is why games will start to lag.

I have had 4 GTX280 so far
I still have 2 , both BFG , GTX280 OC and a GTX280 OC2 (650mhz)

It should never go above 85-90 deg even when furmarking it

My first 2 cards (at launch time) had the fault you describe , running
furmark caused the temp to go to 105 (which is when it starts to throttle itself)

The replacement one did not have this fault, so yes this fault would usually be present at the time you bought it, its weird that your one just developed it.

thank for the replies, i had this card nearly 2 years ago of my bruv, and he said hes its always ran hot....i decided to start checking the gpu temps as i started to get laggy in game.....hence the reason ive cleaned it out......

it didnt make any difference at all to the temps, and i suppose it wouldnt if its faulty.....im planning on running another fan in the case to force air through the gpu, im going to do this tonight after work and will report back what happens......

if its a case of needing a new card, then ill go with a evga gtx580 when overclockers can get em in.......hope my gtx280 last that long hehe....
